    Abstract: Ultraviolet radiation and impact resistant thermoplastic blends are provided which comprise:(a) a polymer triblend comprising:i. from about 5 parts per hundred (pph) to about 40 pph of at least one resin selected from the group consisting of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate containing from about 25 percent to about 75 percent vinyl acetate and a terpolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and the theoretical monomer vinyl alcohol containing from about 20 percent to about 80 percent ethylene, from about 18 percent to about 60 percent vinyl acetate and from about 2 percent to about 20 percent vinyl alcohol;ii. from about 50 pph to about 95 pph of a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile containing from about 15 percent to about 40 percent acrylonitrile;iii. from about 0.1 pph to about 40 pph of a chlorine-containing polymer such as chlorinated polyethylene or polyvinylchloride; and(b) from about 2 to about 40 pph titania particulate.

    Abstract: Permanently miscible resin blends containing hydrolyzed ethylene-vinyl acetate resin and demonstrating improved impact-resistance compared to the unblending hydrolyzed ethylene vinyl acetate resin are obtained by blending (a) as host resin, a copolymer/terpolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol in which ethylene is present at from about 2 to about 60 weight percent, vinyl acetate is present at from 0 to about 10 weight percent, and vinyl alcohol is present at about 98 to about 40 weight percent, with (b) an impact-resistance-increasing amount of an impact resin which is a diene-nitrile copolymer in which the diene is present at about 50 to about 85 weight percent and the nitrile is present at about 50 to about 15 weight percent, in the presence of (c) an amount of acid compatibilizing agent and for a period sufficient to provide the aforesaid permanently miscible blends.

    Abstract: A process for toughening ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers is disclosed which comprises reacting a rubbery ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer with oxygen at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, ammonium or zinc salt of a weak aliphatic carboxylic acid, an alkali metal, ammonium or zinc salt of a weak aromatic carboxylic acid, an aliphatic tertiary amine, and an aromatic tertiary amine, for a period sufficient to provide an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer demonstrating an appreciable increase in melt viscosity as indicated by a corresponding decrease in melt flow rate compared with that of the starting copolymer.
