  • Patent number: 4759115
Abstract: A numerically controlled automatic tool changing machining center is provided with a rotary driven spindle concentric within which is a spindle bar that may be reciprocated out from or into the spindle by a hydraulic cylinder. Located at the forward end of the spindle bar is a tool receiving socket which is operative to releasably engage the shank of a single toolholder or multiple spindle toolhead transferred to the spindle bar from the machine tool storage magazine by a tool transfer arm. When a large, single toolholder is engaged by the spindle bar, the spindle bar is retracted into the spindle to urge the large single toolholder against the nose of the spindle.

  • Patent number: 4536111
Abstract: A machine tool having a numerically controlled adjustable arbor for facilitating different straddle milling operations on random workpieces without the need for manual adjustment of the cutter width comprises a frame which carries a power station thereon. The power station has a rotary driven spindle which is journaled within a quill which is movable out from and into the power station under numerical control. A bifurcated arbor, configured of a pair of coaxial shafts which are in sleeved engagement with each other so as to be axially movable to and from each other while rotating co-jointly with each other, is coupled at one end to the power station spindle and is journaled at its distal end in a fixed arbor support. Each shaft of the bifurcated arbor carries a straddle milling cutter thereon in spaced apart relationship with the cutter on the other arbor member.

  • Patent number: 4507850
Abstract: A boring bar adjusting mechanism for automatically correcting an offsize boring cutter. The mechanism includes a measuring gauge and an adjustable boring bar, each mounted in separate tool holders and each stored in the tool storage magazine. The measuring gauge is transferred to the spindle by the machine tool transfer mechanism after a conventional boring operation is completed to measure the work-piece bore. If the bore is inaccurate, the measuring gauge is removed and the boring bar, is loaded into the spindle. The cutting element of the boring bar is adjusted automatically by an adjusting mechanism in response to the bore size measured by the measuring head so that it will machine an accurate bore.

  • Patent number: 4443928
Abstract: Apparatus for simultaneously changing all of the tools in a multiple spindle machining center is provided with a number of tool carrying devices, each device corresponding to a different one of the spindles. Each tool carrying device is capable of selectively engaging each of a number of tools which are dedicated for use with one of the spindles, and is further capable of carrying engaged tools between one of the spindles and one of a plurality of tool storage magazines. A first linear translation device moves each of the tool carrying devices in parallel relationship with a first axis when the tool carrying devices are carrying tools between the spindles and the magazines, and a second linear translation device moves the tool carrying devices in parallel relationship with a second axis during such tool carrying operations, the first and second axes being in orthogonal relationship.

  • Patent number: 4427325
Abstract: An improved multiple spindle toolhead for a machine tool includes a body having at least one tool-carrying spindle journaled into one side thereof and having an input shaft coupled to the spindle and extending from the body side opposite to the spindle for seating in the machine tool spindle. A plurality of threaded studs extends rearwardly from the body for mating engagement with a plurality of threaded elements seated in the machine tool adjacent to the spindle. Means are provided in the machine tool for rotatably driving the threaded elements relative to the threaded studs on the toolhead body to secure the toolhead against the machine tool.

  • Patent number: 4329770
Abstract: An automatic tool changer for a machine tool having a rotary toolhead with cross-feed slide includes a tilt unit having a tool socket which is pivotal between a first position, parallel to the axis of a machine tool storage magazine to permit loading or unloading of a machine tool carrier into the tool socket from the tool storage magazine by a transfer arm, and a second position parallel to the axis of the rotary toolhead. A tool changer arm, having tool grippers at opposite ends, moves along and rotates about an axis parallel to the rotary toolhead to exchange the tool carrier in the tool socket of the tilt unit with the tool carrier in the rotary toolhead, thereby permitting a new machining operation to be performed by the machine tool as well as storage of the machine tool carrier previously held in the rotary toolhead.

  • Patent number: 4306350
Abstract: A combined tool storage and tool change arrangement for use with a machine tool of the type which includes a power driven rotatable spindle having a socket which receives a tool shank of a predetermined size. The tool storage arrangement comprises a main tool storage magazine with a plurality of tool receiving sockets sized to respectively receive a tool having a shank of said predetermined size. Means is provided for moving the main tool storage magazine whereby to present a predetermined tool receiving socket and the tool therein to a first tool transfer point. An auxiliary tool storage magazine is provided for receiving and storing a plurality of tools having shanks of a different size than said predetermined size. The auxiliary tool storage magazine has a shank of said predetermined size whereby the auxiliary tool storage magazine may be stored in a socket of the main tool storage magazine.

  • Patent number: 4288909
Abstract: An automatic tool changer for transferring single tools and/or multiple spindle toolheads between a tool storage magazine and a horizontal spindle of a machine tool. A plurality of single tools and/or toolheads are stored in the tool storage magazine with their shanks in a vertical position. A first tool change arm transfers a selected tool or toolhead from the storage magazine to a tilt unit which tilts the shank of the tool or toolhead by 90.degree. from a vertical to a horizontal position parallel with the axis of the spindle. A second tool change arm removes the tools or toolheads from the tilt unit and spindle simultaneously, interchanges them, and inserts the interchanged tools or toolheads into the spindle and tilt unit. The tilt unit then tilts by 90.degree. back to the vertical position, and the first tool change arm returns the tool or toolhead in the tilt unit back to the tool storage magazine.

  • Patent number: 4190948
Abstract: The spindle head of a gantry type vertical spindle machining center is slidably mounted on a spindle base which is pivotally mounted on the saddle for rocking movement about a horizontal axis to cause the axis of the spindle to tilt from the vertical. A tool storage magazine is mounted on the spindle base and is tiltable along with the spindle to enable toolholders to be transferred between the spindle and tool storage magazine at any spindle tilt angle. A tool changer arm is mounted on the tool storage magazine for transferring tools between the spindle and the tool storage magazine.

  • Patent number: 4125932
Abstract: A plurality of multiple spindle toolheads are stored in a carousel-type toolhead magazine on top of a machine tool which includes a toolhead driver for driving any selected one of the toolheads. The toolhead driver is mounted for movement along a Z axis toward and away from a worktable. A rotary toolhead changer arm for transferring toolheads from the toolhead magazine to the toolhead driver and vice versa is mounted on the machine for rotation about an axis which is inclined at an angle of 45.degree. to the Z axis. The toolhead changer arm has two diametrically opposed ends which are each inclined at an angle of 45.degree. to the rotary axis of the toolhead changer arm. Clamps are mounted on both ends of the toolhead changer arm for clamping toolheads thereto. When the toolhead changer arm is rotated through 180.degree.
