  • Patent number: 5195670
Abstract: A heavy duty bicycle rack which has angle adjustable support legs, wherein adjustment of the support arms does not require simultaneous adjustment of the legs which support the carrier on the vehicle. The rack includes a heavy duty positive locking mechanism in which locking pin ends are biased into a locking position, thereby selecting the angular position for the bicycle support arms relative to the legs. The locking pins are the ends of handles which can be pulled or withdrawn slightly to release the pins from the locking apertures to afford rotary movement of the support arms. The handles with the locking pin ends are supported in clam shell or cup shaped shells, these shells having apertures which permit relative movement of the handles and pin ends. Springs which bias the handles toward the locking position are confined in the cup shaped shells. A bolt secures each pair of shells, one support arm and brackets on each of the support frames together in assembly.

  • Patent number: 5135145
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a bike carrier with rotary mounting means to adjust the angle of the support arms. A wide base with diverging frame portions provides support for heavy mountaineer bikes. Soft sleeves on the support arms have recesses to position several bikes in spaced relationship. In one embodiment rigid tubular arms fasten the rack to the gap between the roof and door of a van or wagon.

  • Patent number: 5085360
Abstract: A bicycle carrier mounted on a vehicle spare tire mounted in a vertical plane. The carrier includes a rail positioned alongside the spare tire and a U-bolt positioned on the opposite side of the spare tire with the ends extending across the tire and extending through the rail to form a rectangular opening which receives the spare tire. An upright standard, affixed to the rail, extends upwardly to support a beam parallel with the rail. A pair of horizontal spring loaded arms pivot with respect to the beam between an operative position, wherein the arms are normal to the beam, and an inoperative position, where the arms overlie the beam. One of the arms is fitted with a double link pivoting in a vertical plane and having a free end for receiving a padlock when the link is pivoted to overlie the bicycle frame and straddle the arm. A padlock inserted through the link free end captures the bicycle frame between the arm and the link.

  • Patent number: 4848112
Abstract: A lockable rotary attachment device including an axially threaded attachment member having an externally splined drive head and a flange defining oppositely facing annular shoulders, and a knob mounted for axial translation on the attachment member between first and second axial positions on the attachment member. The knob is freely rotatable relative to the attachment member in the first axial position and has an internally splined socket for non-rotatably receiving the drive head when in the second axial position. A lock is mounted on the knob for moving a latch member between a first latch position in which it is disposed outwardly of the flange on the attachment member to allow axial translation of the knob between the first and second axial positions, and a second latch position disposed radially inwardly of the flange for engagement with the first shoulder when the knob is in its first axial position and for engagement with the second shoulder when the knob is in its second axial position.

  • Patent number: 4702401
Abstract: A bicycle support device including a channel for receiving the wheels of a bicycle and a bicycle frame engaging structure for supporting a bicycle in a plane generally bisecting the channel with the wheels resting in the channel. A toggle type wheel engaging clamp is mounted on the channel and arranged to engage a bicycle wheel at a location above the channel and is movable to a clamp position in which it draws the wheel in a direction having one component toward the channel to firmly press the wheel in the channel and a second component lengthwise of the channel to aid in retaining the bicycle against movement longitudinally of the channel. The wheel engaging clamp is adjustable along the channel to accommodate different bicycles.
