  • Patent number: 6477796
Abstract: A tip of a tooth assembly for a ground engaging implement or bucket is constructed with a necked down portion to provide the tip with a reduced cross-section sufficient to cause the tip to fail at the necked down portion when the tip is subjected to a sufficiently large vertical load in order to prevent the breakage of an adapter on which the tip is mounted. The tip also has side ears with side surfaces that are disposed at a slight angle relative to their mating side surfaces of the adapter ear pockets so as to diverge away from the side surface of their respective ear pocket. This construction prevents the distal ends of the ears from contacting the side surfaces when the tip experiences high side or lateral loads in order to alleviate lateral loads from being exerted on the distal ends of the ears through lateral contact with the adapter.

  • Patent number: 5852888
Abstract: An apparatus for protecting a base edge of a bucket of an earth working machine includes a fixed component secured to the base edge of the bucket, the fixed component having a first aperture extending therethrough. The apparatus also includes a protection member having a second aperture extending therethrough, wherein (1) the protection member is positioned relative to the fixed component such that the first aperture and the second aperture align to form a passageway having a first end and a second end, the passageway defining a passageway sidewall extending between the first end and the second end, (2) the protection member has a first notch defined therein, (3) the first notch is defined in the passageway sidewall, and (4) the first notch is spaced apart from both the first end and the second end of the passageway sidewall.

  • Patent number: 5456029
Abstract: Couplers have been utilized to connect a tooth to an adapter of an implement. It is advantageous to have a coupler that effectively and efficiently transfers forces subjected to the tooth to the adapter of the implement. Furthermore, it is advantageous to have a coupler that can be quickly and easily mounted to the adapter and likewise is able to quickly and easily assemble and disassemble a tooth thereto. In the subject arrangement, a coupler is provided and has a tooth mounting portion with a nose portion having a pair of load bearing surfaces, a pair of spaced apart grooves, a pin opening, and a transverse opening that is oriented perpendicular with and in intersecting relationship with the pin opening. The coupler also includes an adapter receiving portion which has a cavity defined therein with a pair of spaced apart load transferring surfaces located in the cavity generally adjacent the bottom thereof and a retainer opening defined therein in intersecting relationship with the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5412885
Abstract: Edge protectors for the leading portions of base edges have been utilized in many application to protect the leading portion of the base edge. It is advantageous to have an edge protector that is readily removed and replaced without having to remove additional elements. In the subject arrangement, a base edge protector assembly is included having a protector mounting lug and a replaceable lip protector. The protector mounting lug has a pair of spaced apart bosses and a laterally disposed flange therebetween while the lip protector has a cavity and load transferring surfaces located in the cavity. When assembled the load transferring surfaces are in mating contact with the laterally disposed flange of the protector mounting lug. First and second pairs of aligned openings are located in the lip protector and, when assembled, are in general alignment with the openings located in each boss of the pair of bosses. Flex pins are disposed in the openings to secure the lip protector to the protector mounting lug.

  • Patent number: 5386653
Abstract: Tooth assemblies having a tip with ears extending rearwardly therefrom to mate with corresponding slots in an adapter are normally utilized in order to aid in the transfer of forces from the tip to the adapter. Since the forces being directed to the tip are normally applied in various directions and of varying magnitudes, the ears extending from the tip may be subjected to forces attempting to pry them outwardly, thus, subjecting them to the possibility of breakage. In the subject arrangement, a tip includes a pair of opposed ears each having a pair of opposed edge surfaces that are angled one relative to the other. The pair of opposed ears of the tip mates with a pair of corresponding opposed slots defined in an adapter. The pair of opposed slots in the adapter likewise has a pair of opposed edge surfaces angled with respect to one another and are in confronting mating relationship with the pair of opposed edge surfaces of the pair of opposed ears.

  • Patent number: 5333696
Abstract: Reversible protectors are normally utilized to protect the leading edge of a work member from high wear during use. It is also advantageous to have a reversible protector that can be secured to a work member even though the work member may be composed of several components which are welded together thus adversely affecting the tolerances between the various components. In this subject arrangement, a reversible protector is provided and adapted to be mounted on and secured to a work member. The reversible protector has recesses located in the lower end thereof which, when assembled, are in mating engagement with protuberances on the work member. This mating engagement secures the lower end of the reversible protector to the work member. A pair of aligned openings are provided near the other end thereof which aligns with a transverse hole in the work member for receiving a retaining mechanism therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5272824
Abstract: Tooth assemblies having a tooth attached to an adapter by a retaining mechanism is normally utilized in order to readily replace the tooth which is a high wear element. It is advantageous to have a retaining mechanism that is both simple, easy to install and remove and provides a high holding force to the pin to offset any tendency of the pin coming out during use. In the subject arrangement, a substantially flat leaf spring retainer is provided and is located in a retainer opening transverse to a pin. Upon installing the pin, the leaf spring is forced to flex. The force needed to flex the leaf spring is likewise the effective force holding the pin in its assembled position. A central groove is defined in the pin and is of a sufficient size to receive the portion of the leaf spring in contact therewith once the pin is in its installed position. Once the leaf spring drops into the central groove, the degree of deflection of the leaf spring is reduced resulting in the life of the leaf spring being increased.

  • Patent number: 4272097
Abstract: A drawbar for mounting two or more farm implement tool bars to a vehicle, such as a tractor, includes a single elongated crossbar with running gear. The crossbar extends transverse to the direction of vehicle travel and is hitched to the vehicle by a bracket and hitch assembly. Multiple farm implement tool bars are attached to the cross bar for field operation. The crossbar is hinged at its center and by proper adjustment of the bracket assembly may be folded to extend in the direction of vehicle travel. The drawbar is thereby converted to a narrow profile acceptable for road travel.
