  • Patent number: 6557511
Abstract: A suction system has an arrangement for utilizing resonance effects and is suitable for an internal-combustion engine having opposed cylinder banks. The suction system has a resonance container which has boundary walls. On the one hand, the resonance container is connected with the atmosphere and, on the other hand, it is connected with cylinders of the internal-combustion engine, the arrangement being provided in the resonance container as a control device which can vary the resonance cross-section, and the resonance container is connected with a feeding device having separate feeding pipes. For optimizing the torque behavior of the internal-combustion engine, the control device is fixed from the idling to a medium rotational speed range in a first end position and, together with the feeding pipes of the feeding device, forms two guiding channels which supply the cylinders the two cylinder banks with air.

  • Patent number: 6397802
Abstract: A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with at least one cylinder row is equipped with a cylinder head housing containing intake and exhaust valves that feed combustion air to the cylinders and release combustion exhaust gases through an exhaust system via control devices in dependence of the position of the crankshaft. Devices for generating differing exhaust valve lift progressions of at least two cylinders arranged in one cylinder row are incorporated to reduce overlapping opening phases of these exhaust valves. The intake valve and the exhaust valve of one of the two cylinders are themselves in an overlapping opening phase. Thereby, a uniform filling rate of the cylinders with new gas is achieved, particularly on a V-8 engine with a 90°-bent crankshaft.

  • Patent number: 6209318
Abstract: An exhaust gas system of a multi-cylinder internal-combustion engine has two groups of cylinders and one exhaust pipe system respectively and has a connection pipe between the exhaust pipe systems which is arranged close to the engine and which is constructed as a resonance pipe. The connection pipe can be shut off and opened up as a function of at least one operating parameter of the internal-combustion engine. By way of this connection pipe serving as the resonance pipe, resonance vibrations can be generated between the two exhaust pipe systems as a function of the ignition sequence and the rotational speed of the internal-combustion engine. Should these resonance effects cause a deterioration in the course in the torque as a function of the rotational speed, the switching flap is closed. When a positive effect is caused, the switching flap is opened up.

  • Patent number: 5582004
Abstract: A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is provided with a group of constantly operated cylinders and a group of cylinders that can be switched off. An exhaust line having a catalytic converter is associated with each group of cylinders. A shutoff element is disposed downstream of the catalytic converter of the constantly operated cylinder subassembly. In addition, the two exhaust lines or the two catalytic converters are connected to each other via a bypass line. Maintaining the temperature of the second catalytic converter is made possible via the bypass line, even when the cylinders of the second group are not operated and when the exhaust line is closed.

  • Patent number: 5495834
Abstract: Two-bank internal-combustion engine, per cylinder bank air intake system has, per cylinder bank, one resonance container and, centered thereto, has another container. By way of suction pipes, the resonance containers are connected to the cylinders and are provided with connecting pipes among one another, with fresh air entering into one of these. Suction pipe extensions are connected to the other containers, and extend partially in the resonance containers while being aligned at a distance with the inflow funnels of the suction pipes. The combination of the connecting pipes acting as a resonance pipe with the suction pipe extensions acting as a ram pipe causes a mean pressure increase, whereby the torque as well as the power of the internal-combustion engine are increased.

  • Patent number: 5490484
Abstract: An air intake system has two resonance chambers coupled together by connecting pipes. The resonance chambers are connected to the cylinders by individual intake pipes. A further common chamber is coupled by means of resonance pipes to the resonance chamber. The connecting pipe and several of the resonance pipes have controllable blocking elements. A branch that supplies air to the system is connected with one of the connecting pipes and the further chamber. To deliberately increase the mean pressure, the blocking elements can be connected in cascade fashion as the rpm rises, causing the coupled volume to increase.

  • Patent number: 5406913
Abstract: The air intake system of a two-bank internal-combustion engine has one resonance receptacle for each cylinder bank and an additional receptacle in the respective center. Via suction pipes, the resonance receptacles are connected to the cylinders and are mutually provided with connecting pipes, fresh air entering into one of these connecting pipes. Suction pipe extensions are connected to the other receptacle which partially extend inside the resonance receptacles and are arranged in them at a distance in an alignment with the admission funnels of the suction pipes. The combination of the connecting pipes acting as resonance pipes and the suction pipe extensions acting as swing pipes causes an increase of the mean pressure which raises the torque as well as the performance of the internal-combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 5325666
Abstract: The exhaust gases of a two-bank internal-combustion engine are guided, by way of exhaust gas collectors, to a central expansion chamber of a housing. From there, they flow through main catalysts arranged on opposite ends of the housing, before they are guided into the open air by way of end mufflers. This exhaust system provides a space-saving arrangement of all components required for an optimal emission control, and low exhaust gas back pressure, and meets all acoustic requirements.
