Patent number: 8974640Abstract: The present invention relates to a feed distribution device in separation columns and a method of operation. In particular it relates to distillation columns in which the feed stream is substantially liquid phase, or a mixture of gas and liquid upstream of the column, but where the feed vaporizes or vaporizes more when it enters the column. More specifically, the feed distribution device contains a plurality of opening which allow the feed to vaporize inside the column and where the openings are maintained in critical condition during operation. Significant advantage is achieved through the implementation and use of the present feed distribution device.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2011Date of Patent: March 10, 2015Assignee: Neste Oil OyjInventors: Esa Tamminen, Simo Jortikka, Martti Ruskoaho, Ulla Happonen

Patent number: 8926799Abstract: A feed distribution device in separation columns and a method of operation for such a device. In particular, distillation columns in which the feed stream is substantially liquid phase, or a mixture of gas and liquid upstream of the column, but where the feed vaporizes or partially vaporizes prior to or as it enters the column. More specifically, the feed distribution device contains a plurality of opening which allow the feed to vaporize prior to or as it enters the column and where the openings are maintained in critical condition during operation. Significant advantage is achieved through the implementation and use of the present feed distribution devices.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2011Date of Patent: January 6, 2015Assignee: Neste Oil OyjInventor: Esa Tamminen

Patent number: 8888076Abstract: A separation column containing a feed distribution device and a feed distribution device for a separation column, such as a vacuum distillation column. The feed distribution device being capable of diffusing and directing a feed flow from a feed inlet so as to distribute the feed substantially evenly over the surface area of a separation plate in the column thereby increasing the columns efficiency. The separation column containing the feed distribution device being capable of shorter height, less costly design and lower operating cost than a separation column without the feed distribution device.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2011Date of Patent: November 18, 2014Assignee: Neste Oil OyjInventors: Esa Tamminen, Jari Sutinen

Patent number: 6369280Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing tertiary alkyl ethers, in particular MTBE, ETBE or mixtures of these ethers with heavier ethers. According to the process the feedstock containing hydrocarbons is fed to a catalytic distillation reactor system, in which the isoolefines, in particular the C4 to C7 isoolefines, of the feed are reacted with an alkanol in the presence of a cation exchange resin in order to produce tertiary alkyl ether products. The reaction product containing the ethers is removed from the distillation system as the bottoms product and, if necessary, it is subjected to an additional treatment for producing a gasoline component. The unreacted alkanol is removed as the overhead product of the distillation.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Neste OyInventors: Esa Tamminen, Petri Lindqvist

Patent number: 5852220Abstract: A process for producing tertiary alkyl ethers by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock, which contains a mixture of reactive C.sub.4 -C.sub.7 isoolefins, with an alkanol in the presence of a catalyst that will enhance the reaction between the isoolefins and the alkanol. By adjusting the weight ratio of the isobutylene to the reactive C.sub.6 isoolefins of the feed to a value of about 0.2 to 10, it is possible to increase the conversion of reactive C.sub.4 's to over 95%, of reactive C.sub.5 's to over 85% and of reactive C.sub.6 's to over 57%.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1996Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: Neste OyInventors: Harri Jarvelin, Petri Lindqvist, Esa Tamminen

Patent number: 5536886Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing tertiary alkyl ethers. According to the process the feedstock containing hydrocarbons is fed to a catalytic distillation reactor system, in which the isoolefines, in particular the C.sub.4 to C.sub.7 isoolefines, of the feed are reacted with an alkanol in the presence of a cation exchange resin in order to produce tertiary alkyl ether products. The reaction product containing the ethers is removed from the distillation system as the bottoms product and, if necessary, it is subjected to an additional treatment for producing a gasoline component. The unreacted alkanol is removed as the overhead product of the distillation. According to the invention, the distillate withdrawn mainly contains an azeotrope of C.sub.4 hydrocarbons and alkanol, the C.sub.4 amount of which at least approximately corresponds to the C.sub.4 hydrocarbon concentration of the hydrocarbon feed, a substantial amount of the unreacted alkanol being removed in the form of said azeotrope.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1994Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Neste OyInventors: Esa Tamminen, Juhani Aittamaa, Juha Jakkula
