  • Publication number: 20210062618
Abstract: A multilateral junction comprising a y-block, lateral legs, and a transition sub for use in downhole well environments. The y-block includes a main bore and lateral bores with main bore and the lateral bores having threaded interfaces. The transition sub also includes lateral bores with threaded interfaces for receiving the lateral legs that also have threaded interfaces. The threaded interfaces of the lateral bore of the y-block has a less number of threads than the threaded interfaces of the lateral bores of the transition sub. The lateral leg includes another threaded interface that couples with the threaded interface of the lateral bore. Another end of each lateral leg includes an interface, e.g. a threaded interface, which couples with an interface of a transition sub. The main bore has an internal diameter that is greater than the internal diameter of the lateral bore.

  • Patent number: 10927630
Abstract: A casing exit joint with guiding profiles and methods for use are provided. In one embodiment, a casing exit joint comprises: a substantially tubular casing joint comprising an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein at least a circumferential portion of the inner surface comprises a plurality of axial inner grooves. In certain embodiments, at least a circumferential portion of the outer surface may comprise a plurality of axial outer grooves. The casing exit joint may be disposed in a wellbore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation, and a cutting tool may cut a window through at least a portion of the casing exit joint. In certain embodiments, the axial inner grooves and/or outer grooves may reduce the amount of milling debris, prevent lateral displacement of the cutting tool, and/or eliminate the need to pre-orient the casing exit joint to achieve the desired exit window.

  • Patent number: 10590741
Abstract: A system for controlling flow and access in multilateral completions is disclosed. The system includes a flow control sub having a single bore portion and a dual bore portion with a sleeve disposed therein. The flow control sub further includes a channel in an inner cylindrical surface, and the sleeve includes protrusions configured to engage the channel, which may be extendable. The channel provides paths for the protrusions between three different positions where two positions allow access to one or the other bore of the dual bore portion and a third position allows flow from both bores of the dual bore portion to co-mingle and enter the flow control sub. A run-in tool may be used to engage the sleeve and apply a pulling or pushing force to move the sleeve along the various channel paths to control flow through the flow control sub.

  • Patent number: 9951573
Abstract: A method includes conveying a whipstock and a latch anchor into a parent wellbore, the latch anchor being attached to the whipstock at a releasable connection and the parent wellbore being lined with casing that includes a latch coupling. The latch anchor is secured to the latch coupling and the whipstock is then separated from the latch anchor at the releasable connection and thereby exposing a portion of the releasable connection. The whipstock is then removed from the parent wellbore and a completion deflector is subsequently conveyed into the parent wellbore in combination with lateral tubing (with or without a multilateral junction positioned thereabove), and the completion deflector is attached to the latch coupling at the releasable connection. The lateral tubing (with or without multilateral junction positioned thereabove) is then installed to correct depth.

  • Patent number: 9140081
Abstract: A system for circumferentially aligning a downhole latch subsystem in a wellbore. The system includes an outer tool assembly including a latch coupling having a latch profile and a slot subassembly having an axially extending slot profile. An inner tool assembly is positionable within the outer tool assembly. The inner tool assembly includes a latch assembly having a plurality of latch keys and an orienting subassembly having a plurality orienting keys. In operation, after axial alignment of the orienting subassembly with the slot subassembly, rotation of the orienting subassembly causes operable engagement of at least one orienting key with the slot profile and, thereafter, axial alignment of the latch assembly with the latch coupling causes operable engagement of the latch keys with the latch profile.

  • Patent number: 8967266
Abstract: The lowside of a casing joint is protected from wear while milling a casing exit for a lateral borehole. The casing joint is coupled to a casing string and is made of a material that is softer than that of the casing string. A whipstock assembly is arranged within the casing joint and has a deflector surface operable to direct a drilling assembly into a sidewall of the casing joint to create the casing exit. A wear sleeve is coupled to and extends axially from the whipstock assembly, the wear sleeve defining a throat that extends axially along the axial length of the wear sleeve and transitions into the deflector surface. The axial length of the wear sleeve extends beyond a point of contact where the drilling assembly would otherwise engage the lowside of the casing joint.
