  • Publication number: 20180116002
Abstract: A vehicle backend system and a method of using the backend system to determine availability of a cellular connection between the backend system and a vehicle prior to the backend system attempting to establish the cellular connection. The method includes: determining at the backend system that a vehicle service is to be provided to the vehicle; based on the determination, transmitting from the backend system to a wireless service provider (WSP) or a WSP server a query associated with the connection status of the vehicle; in response to transmitting the query, receiving at the backend system a response to the query, wherein the response indicates that the vehicle is either in a connected state or an un-connected state; and when the vehicle is in the connected state: attempting to establish the cellular connection between the backend system and the vehicle; and when the cellular connection is established, providing the vehicle service.

  • Publication number: 20180108254
Abstract: A system and method for communicating with a plurality of vehicles. The method includes receiving route information from a plurality of telematics units installed into each of the vehicles. The information may be collected as the vehicles are traveling along a vehicle route. The method further includes determining an eligibility of the vehicle route for use with a semi-autonomous driving system of the vehicles from at least the received route information. The method may also include communicating the eligibility of the vehicle route to the vehicles. The system includes a plurality of telematics units configured to collect route information as the vehicles are traveling along a vehicle route. The system further includes a database in communication with the plurality of telematics units. • Publication number: 20180091608
Abstract: A method and system for communicating with a vehicle, e.g., to send vehicle commands. The system is used to carry out the method which includes receiving a user login request establishing a current vehicle application session, and analyzing an application history of the user including usage data for at least one previous vehicle application session of the user. The method includes, based upon the analysis of the previous vehicle application session(s) of the user, limiting or prohibiting use of a packet data session for transmitting vehicle commands to a vehicle in response to the user login request. In other implementations, a previous vehicle application session of the user may be used to present a vehicle command sequence during the current vehicle application session to the user.

  • Publication number: 20170308365
Abstract: A method carried out by a vehicle for facilitating installation of a vehicle access application on a mobile device. The method begins by establishing short range communication with a mobile device. The vehicle sends identification information to a remote facility, wherein the identification information includes information pertaining to the vehicle, a user of the vehicle, and/or the mobile device. The vehicle receives a response from the remote facility wherein the response indicates eligibility of the user to control one or more vehicle operations using the application. The vehicle determines whether the application is installed on the mobile device and prompts the user of the vehicle to install the application to the mobile device when it is determined that the application is not installed on the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 9352680
Abstract: In a messaging system, computer readable instructions are executable by a processor of a communications server to: detect a vehicle remote start attempt that is initiated by a mobile communications device, transmit a remote start request to the vehicle, and receive a notification corresponding to success and/or failure of the attempt. If the attempt fails, the computer readable instructions are executable by the processor to: receive a cause of the failure encoded in a dynamic error message, decode the dynamic error message, and construct a custom failure message that is indicative of the cause of the failure. If the attempt succeeds, the computer readable instructions are executable by the processor to generate a success message based upon the notification corresponding to the success of the attempt. The computer readable instructions are also executable by the processor to transmit the success or custom failure message to the mobile communications device.

  • Publication number: 20150371153
Abstract: A system and method are described for managing nested sharing of vehicles. A shared vehicle server registers, in a shared vehicle database, a primary reservation by a primary borrower for a shared vehicle, that specifies a primary time period. The server receives an indication that the shared vehicle is to be made available for nested sharing during a portion of the primary time period. The server creates a nested sharing availability record, for the shared vehicle, that specifies a sub-period of the primary time period. The shared vehicle server matches the nested sharing availability record to a shared vehicle request for a secondary borrower. The shared vehicle server registers, in the vehicle database, a secondary reservation by the secondary borrower for the shared vehicle that specifies a secondary time period within the sub-period. The server tracks status of the shared vehicle during the secondary time period.

  • Patent number: 9087099
Abstract: A system and method are described herein for acquiring and maintaining, in a centralized repository, driver and vehicle information for the purpose of rendering a rating for individual drivers and vehicles in accordance with established criteria and standards. A driver rating indicates the relative desirability of the particular driver given the expected wear and tear upon a vehicle arising from driver's use of the vehicle. A vehicle rating indicates the relative desirability of the particular vehicle given the use and maintenance history. Additional information is also maintained in the centralized repository that could be used to indicate an event for which a surcharge or discount is applicable. Thereafter, specified filtering criteria are applied bi-laterally to determine a set of rated vehicles that can be used by a particular rated driver.
