    Abstract: The various embodiments provide methods implemented by a mobile communication device for determining whether to camp on a cell based on an updated measurement of the received signal strength associated with the cell. A mobile communication device may determine an updated received signal strength for an absolute radio-frequency channel number (“ARFCN”) associated with a cell while or after acquiring and decoding the ARFCN's broadcast control channel. The mobile communication device may utilize the updated signal strength value when calculating the ARFCN's cell's suitability criteria instead of the potentially stale signal strength value acquired during an initial power scan over the frequency band, thereby enabling the mobile communication device to make more accurate cell suitability determinations. Thus, the mobile communication device may experience an increase in performance and/or may increase the user's experience.
