    Abstract: The present invention provides for an improved air-flow sensitive float valve interposed between the collection chamber and one arm of the water seal chamber for allowing the patient to draw as much vacuum pressure as is required during deep inspiration. The float valve also functions to provide for an automatic controlled release of excess negative pressure in the collection chamber during either continuous autotransfusion or when there is a low air flow rate condition present. By tailoring a specific amount of water to a given size chamber, the water column inside the water seal chamber is allowed to momentarily engage the floating mechanism before the water seal chamber is emptied of water and a column of air is subsequently forced through the water column towards the momentarily sealed valve. Once the air column reaches the valve, the water supporting the valve is displaced and the valve is released until the air column is replaced by another rising water column.

    Abstract: A progressive filtration system for a chest drainage unit during continuous autotransfusion that allows the user to clear the fluid pathway of blood clots and trapped air that form after filtration in a flushing action initiated by the user. The filtration system comprises a gross filter for filtering incoming blood at the inlet portion of a collection chamber of a chest drainage unit and a fine filter assembly located at the bottom portion of the collection chamber for refiltering collected blood prior to reinfusion of that blood back to the patient. The filter assembly includes a valve cap at the top portion of the assembly that functions as a one way valve that permits reflux of later developing blood clots that might clog the tubing once the blood has already passed through the assembly. The valve cap is also adapted for sealing engagement with a drop tube that places the filter assembly in fluid flow communication with an outlet of the collection chamber located at the top portion of the chamber.

    Abstract: A syringe needle thimble cap and its method of use is shown such that the thimble cap has a porous plastic, hydrophilic core captured within a cylindrical cap member for use with an arterial blood gas syringe barrel and needle assembly. The syringe needle thimble cap has a generally thimble-shaped cap with a proximal opening. The porous plastic core material is positioned within the thimble cap distally to the proximal opening, and the core material is held in place by an inwardly extending ring to prevent its removal. An open or hollow space is created distally to the porous material which is otherwise bounded by the interior surfaces of the thimble cap.

    Abstract: A CDU hanger mount assembly and hanger is provided. The mount assembly and hanger allows the CDU to be supported by an object for supporting the CDU while the connecting point between the hanger mount and the pivot end of the hanger may be selectively moved from a point midway between the front and back of the CDU top toward the back of the CDU. This allows the CDU to be less displaced from the vertical upon displacing contact with an object such as a bedframe piece. The hanger and hanger mount assembly allows the alignment of the indicia on the CDU with the top surface of the material collected in the CDU to be a more accurate representation of the actual volume of material collected in the CDU. The mount assembly and hanger may also be used with medical devices other than CDUs.

    Abstract: A connector and method is disclosed for connecting a thoracic catheter to a source of suction. The connector comprises a first tube approximately equal in inner diameter to the inner diameter of the main lumen of the thoracic catheter and a second tube connected to and in fluid communication with the first tube along a common longitudinal axis. The first and second tubes form a continuous non-constricted passage through the first and second tubes. In one embodiment, a connecting tube is placed over and in binding contact with the second tube at one end and in contact with the source of suction at the other end. In another embodiment, primarily for use with catheters with a funnel tip for connecting to the source of suction, the first and second tubes have inner diameters approximately equal to the inner diameter of the main lumen of the thoracic catheter.

Additionally, the plunger rod may be moved in the syringe barrel in a laterally offset manner with respect to the longitudinal axis of the syringe barrel without significantly affecting the seal between the plunger tip and the syringe barrel.

Additionally, a relatively small stylet lumen is provided separate from said enteral feeding lumen, the stylet lumen having a stylet lumen inlet opening adjacent the proximal end of the tube and being longitudinally co-extensive with a substantial length of the enteral feeding lumen. A relatively stiff stylet having a tapered annealed distal portion is removably positioned in the stylet lumen and extends from the stylet inlet lumen opening to adjacent to the feeding lumen outlet opening.

The second passage is connected to a vacuum pump, which creates a suction within the collection chamber through the liquid seal chamber. A third body includes a U-shaped chamber to regulate the negative pressure produced by the vacuum pump to a desired negative pressure. The second body also includes a second U-shaped chamber having one end connected to the atmosphere and its other end connected to the liquid seal chamber adjacent its connection to the first passage.

The vacuum assist device aids in the expansion of the container and in developing a vacuum in the container upon expansion. The vacuum assist device within the evacuator acts to maintain a substantially constant level of vacuum as the evacuator expands while drawing fluids from a closed wound and collecting the fluids in the evacuator container. The evacuator includes an outlet for providing communication between the interior of the container and the atmosphere, and an inlet providing commuication between the interior of the container and a drainage tube. The evacuator may include a novel valve mechanism which enables the evacuator to be activated, held in an activated position until needed, and then released from the held position for use to draw fluid from a patient.

    Abstract: An autotransfusion set includes a housing having a blood filtering and defoaming chamber connected to receive blood from a patient, and a blood reservoir connected to receive blood from the chamber and having an outlet for returning the blood to the patient, the blood normally being returned under pressure to increase the rate of infusion. A pressure relief valve is connected to the housing which has discrete, selectable pressure settings to limit the pressure within the chamber to a desired value. A float valve is disposed in the reservoir for closing it to the outlet when the blood level reaches a predetermined minimum level so as to preclude the infusion of air emboli to the patient, and for opening the reservoir to the outlet after the blood level has risen above the minimum level in order to reestablish infusion.
