Patent number: 8398598Abstract: Featured is a medical infusion device for vascular access with enhanced flashback visualization that includes a hub assembly having a flashback chamber. The hub assembly includes a proximal portion, a distal portion and a substantially transparent window section intermediate the proximal portion and distal portion. A needle is coupled to the flashback chamber so that fluid flows through the lumen of the needle into the flashback chamber after the needle is inserted into a blood vessel. A contrasting member is disposed on at least a portion of the hub assembly, so that when blood enters the flashback chamber, the contrasting member provides a high-contrast background when viewed through the window section.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2010Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Inventors: James L. Carlyon, Eugene F. Schrader, Richard L. Fiser

Patent number: 7695458Abstract: Featured is a vascular access device such as an IV catheter device including a housing, a tubular member, a seal member, a compression member, and a securing mechanism. The housing includes a proximal and distal portion and a chamber that extends between the proximal and distal housings. The tubular member is coupled to the housing distal portion so it is fluidly coupled to the chamber. The seal member is disposed within the chamber and the securing mechanism secures the seal member distal end to the housing proximal portion so the seal member is sealingly and compressibly retained between a chamber proximal end and the securing mechanism. Such a seal member also forms a septum, which is compressed by the compression member to prevent seepage upon removal of a stylet.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2006Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Tyco Healthcare Group LPInventors: Richard A. Belley, Eugene F. Schrader, Eugene E. Weilbacher, Richard Fiser

Patent number: 6659987Abstract: A fill spout for a drainage device is disclosed which permits the user to supply water directly to a water seal chamber of the drainage device for establishing a water seal therein. The fill spout comprises a funnel having lateral sides for facilitating the entry of the water into the drainage device, a depending lip extending from the fill spout for preventing any run off or spillage, and a tab having an arcuate-shaped rest which permits the user to open and close the fill spout. In use, the user pulls the tab which opens the fill spout and places a water-filled bottle against the rest. The user then pours a predetermined amount of water through the funnel and directly into the water seal chamber.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Sherwood Services AGInventors: David R. Swisher, Tony Lewis, Eugene F. Schrader, Michael D. Hudspeth

Publication number: 20030139769Abstract: A milking device having a flexible, unitary body for securing and compressing patient tubing is disclosed comprising first and second portions which are tapered from one another and define a conduit that communicates with a channel formed on one side of the device and an opposing slot formed on the other side thereof. First and second portions further define first and second receptacles, respectively, each adapted to receive a roller disposed rotatably therein for engaging patient tubing. A pair of guides are provided at the entrance of the device in order to facilitate the axial advancement of patient tubing through the conduit of the body. Distal and proximal openings are formed at either end of the conduit to receive a portion of patient tubing inserted through the channel. The device may then be advanced longitudinally along the tubing as a user presses the two rollers together and engages the tubing while progressively evacuating the contents thereof into an appropriate collection site.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 10, 2003Publication date: July 24, 2003Inventors: Eugene F. Schrader, David R. Swisher, Daniel Peterson, Kurt Peterson, James Hand, Douglas Elsie

Patent number: 5250027Abstract: The present invention relates to a sensed member and sensing member for use on a medical fluid infusion device and support device wherein the fluid infusion device is usable in a conventional manner such as on an IV pole and in an ambulatory manner such as in a support device for use in an ambulatory backpack. The sensing member of the present invention detects when the fluid infusion device is to be used in an ambulatory manner to adjust the operation of the infusion control member to account for the difference in fluid flow rates caused by the different fluid pressures within the fluid delivery set when the fluid infusion device is used in a conventional manner and an ambulatory manner.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1991Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Assignee: Sherwood Medical CompanyInventors: Thomas G. Lewis, Denis Y. Yerlikaya, Eugene F. Schrader

Patent number: 5242389Abstract: A relatively flexible, dual-lumen enteral feeding tube for delivery of fluid through a patient's esophagus to the patient's digestive system, the enteral feeding tube having proximal and distal ends. The tube comprises an enteral feeding lumen having a feeding lumen inlet opening adjacent the proximal end of the tube and a feeding lumen outlet opening adjacent the distal end of the tube. Additionally, a relatively small stylet lumen is provided separate from said enteral feeding lumen, the stylet lumen having a stylet lumen inlet opening adjacent the proximal end of the tube and being longitudinally co-extensive with a substantial length of the enteral feeding lumen. A relatively stiff stylet having a tapered annealed distal portion is removably positioned in the stylet lumen and extends from the stylet inlet lumen opening to adjacent to the feeding lumen outlet opening.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1992Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Sherwood Medical CompanyInventors: Eugene F.
