Publication number: 20100047425Abstract: A scoop cutter and method for producing shaped food products. A rotating arcuate blade with a cutting edge on at least one side works in conjunction with a thickness spacing sphere to produce a shaped food product having three dimensions. As food product in the form of non-sticky, low tact dough, or raw or whole fruits and vegetables comes into contact with the thickness spacing sphere, the blade slices it, creating shaped food products with uniform thickness. The width to depth ratio of the shaped food product is adjustable depending on the desired texture and size.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 19, 2008Publication date: February 25, 2010Applicant: FRITO-LAY NORTH AMERICA, INC.Inventors: Daniel Eugene ORR, John Michael PENNINGTON

Publication number: 20080010945Abstract: A handle assembly for a pourable package. The handle assembly attaches to a package having a front panel, a back panel, a bottom panel and opposing side gussets in which each side gusset has an inside wall and an outside wall. The handle assembly partially positions within an opening of the side gusset and partially positioned beyond the opening. The handle assembly comprises hand portions, each hand portion having a tab that extends beyond the opening and along the inside wall of the side gusset. The handle assembly further comprises a seal member positioned on the inside wall of the side gusset and around the opening wherein the seal member seals the tabs to the inside wall of the side gusset and seals the opening.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2007Publication date: January 17, 2008Inventors: S. McKenna, Eugene Orr

Patent number: 7293974Abstract: Apparatus for cutting a puff extrudate utilizing a blade that passes through the extrudate while the extrudate is in a viscous melt stage. The present invention utilizes a tube to facilitate production of a curly puff extrudate. A gap is provided in between the tube and the extruder die to allow a blade to access the extrudate as it exits an orifice in the die. The blade accesses the extrudate at the viscous melt stage, before the extrudate has cooled and hardened. The blade nicks the extrudate, as opposed to completely cutting it, which allows the extrudate to remain connected throughout processing such as curling in the containment tube. The gap also allows steam to be vented form the extrudate as it exits the orifice in the die. The nicked extrudate separates when fried or baked.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2004Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Eugenio Bortone, Daniel Eugene Orr, Devang Jitendra Sutaria

Patent number: 6638553Abstract: The system and method for monolayer alignment snack chip transfer process a snack chip from a first to a second conveyor. By using a roll at the discharge of the toast oven conveyor that has a diameter that is substantially closer in size to the pickup roll of the second conveyor, mechanical devices for lifting the chips off of the toast oven conveyor can be avoided. Further, chip preforms' alignment in passing between the two conveyors is maintained.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2001Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: RECOT, Inc.Inventors: Brian Keith Bell, Steven Theodore Chandler, Eric P. Farabaugh, Joseph H. Gold, Terry Dale Klockenga, John Curtis McConn, Daniel Eugene Orr, Edward Leon Ouellette, Scott L. Robinson, Heinz Roel, Richard James Ruegg

Patent number: 6610344Abstract: The process for making a shaped snack chip uses various components to form a chip having depth such as a bowl-shaped tortilla chip. The chips are formed by sheeting into an initial flat shape. The chips are then passed along for shaping by a mold and plunger conveyor. Once plunged to the mold shape, the chips are reduced in moisture content by baking and frying. After frying, oil is evacuated from the chips whereafter salt and flavoring is applied, if desired, prior to being packaged.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Recot, Inc.Inventors: Brian Keith Bell, Steven Theodore Chandler, Eric P. Patent number: 6592923Abstract: The system and method for molding a shaped snack chip use various components to form chips having depth such as a bowl-shaped tortilla chip. Essentially flat chip preforms are fed to a series of molds disposed about a mold conveyor. The preforms are then passed along for shaping by a mold and plunger conveyor. A continuous conveyor with plungers extending outward is synchronized to operate in conjunction with the mold conveyor. At desired and determined intervals, a multiple of plungers extend downward and into the molds thereby molding the chip preforms into shaped chips. The shaped chips are evacuated from the molds and subjected to additional processing.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Recot, Inc.Inventors: Steven Theodore Chandler, Terry Dale Klockenga, Daniel Eugene Orr, Edward Leon Ouellette, Richard James Ruegg, Alexa W.
