  • Publication number: 20110136711
Abstract: A process for preparing a highly overbased magnesium alkyltoluene sulfonates comprising: (A) reacting at least one oil soluble alkyltoluene sulfonic acid and at least one source of magnesium, in the presence of a mixture comprising: (i) at least one hydrocarbon solvent; and (ii) at least one low molecular weight alcohol; (B) contacting the reaction product of (A) with at least one promoter and water; (C) contacting the product of (B) with an overbasing acid; and (D) heating the reaction product of (C) to a temperature greater than the distillation temperature of the hydrocarbon solvent, the low molecular weight alcohol, and the water to distill the hydrocarbon solvent, the low molecular weight alcohol, and the water.

  • Publication number: 20070244017
Abstract: The present invention is directed to super overbased polyalkenyl sulfonate and alkylaryl sulfonate composition comprising (a) one or more super overbased polyalkenyl sulfonates and (b) one or more super overbased alkylaryl sulfonates wherein the total base number (TBN) of the sulfonate composition is greater than 400. The present invention is also directed to a process for preparing such super overbased polyalkenyl sulfonate and alkylaryl sulfonate composition.

  • Publication number: 20070105730
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel unsulfurized, carboxylate-containing additive for lubricating oils, comprising a mixture of alkaline earth metal salts (hydrocarbyl phenate/hydrocarbyl salicylate) and a reduced amount of unreacted hydrocarbyl phenols, as well as additive packages, concentrates and finished oil compositions comprising the same. Specifically, it relates to additives comprising said mixture in which said hydrocarbyl salicylate is primarily single-aromatic-ring hydrocarbyl salicylate. The invention also provides a method for producing said additive.

  • Publication number: 20050059560
Abstract: An improved process for making stabilized polyalkenyl sulfonic acids, whereby the product resulting from the reaction between a polyalkene and sulfur trioxide is stabilized by neutralizing with a neutralizing agent prior to storage or further processing. Neutralization at this point in the process results in polyalkenyl sulfonic acid that is stable and has a decreased amount of sultones.

  • Publication number: 20040235682
Abstract: The present invention provides engine lubricants for low emission diesel engines featuring low levels of ash, sulfur and phosphorus. Specifically, this invention provides a low emission diesel lubricant comprising from about 0 wt. % to about 1.2 wt. % ash; from about 0.1 wt. % to about 0.5 wt. % sulfur; and from about 0.02 wt. % to about 0.1 wt. % phosphorus. Said lubricant may also comprise a novel unsulfurized, carboxylate-containing additive for lubricating oils, comprising a mixture of alkaline earth metal salts (hydrocarbyl phenate/hydrocarbyl salicylate) and a reduced amount of unreacted hydrocarbyl phenols, in which said hydrocarbyl salicylate is primarily single-aromatic-ring hydrocarbyl salicylate. The invention also provides a method for producing said additive and said LEDL.
