  • Patent number: 6491129
Abstract: An agricultural tractor having a rear suspension with draft compensating geometry to control the compression or extension of the rear suspension in response to a draft load. The draft compensating suspension enables the tractor hitch to be mounted on the suspended frame or chassis of the tractor rather than mounting the hitch to a non-suspended beam axle or locking out the suspension during draft work. The draft load is applied to the chassis by a ground engaging implement. The tractive load and torque at the rear wheels are reacted through the side view instantaneous center of the rear suspension. The placement of the instantaneous center will determine the suspension reaction to the wheel load and torque. Locating the suspension instantaneous center on a line of 100% draft-compensation will eliminate the motion of the suspension due to the draft load. If the instantaneous center is located below the 100% draft-compensation line, the suspension will compress under a draft load.

  • Publication number: 20010029794
Abstract: A system for filling a substrate having at least one chamber with a liquid sample is provided. The system in one embodiment includes a substrate defining a network of passageways including at least one chamber for the liquid sample, and an adapter. The adapter includes a fill reservoir for the liquid sample, a vacuum port for attachment to a vacuum source, and at least two channels. One channel allows a vacuum to be imparted to the network, and the other channel allows the liquid sample to be introduced into the network. The system also includes a mechanism that sequentially closes and opens at least one of the channels so that a vacuum can first be introduced to the substrate and thereafter the liquid sample introduced to the substrate for permitting the vacuum to urge the liquid sample to flow from the fill reservoir into the substrate. An apparatus for positioning a substrate with a plurality of sample detection chambers in a detection unit is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6218641
Abstract: The present invention is a method for compensating for stress induced in optical components used to couple light egressing from the housing of optical modules employing, for example, a distributed optical isolator. It has been discovered that this induced stress may be counteracted by transmitting a balancing or compensating force so as to produce a counter-stress in the optical component. Preferably, the method uses pairs of circumferential laser welds judiciously formed a distance form the holder housing the optical component so as s to control the magnitude and direction of the applied compensating force and, hence, the counter-stress transmitted to the optical component. During welding, the effects of the induced stress are monitored and based upon any changes therein, pairs of laser welds are formed around the circumferential surface of the housing of the optical component until the induced stress is substantially reduced or eliminated.
