  • Patent number: 4688471
Abstract: An air motor having four circumferentially spaced, radially disposed cylinders the respective radially inner ends of which slidingly engage different faces of a cube-shaped cam that is eccentrically mounted with respect to a stationary motor housing. The cam serves as a drive shaft because its eccentric mounting causes it to rotate responsive to air pressure sequentially applied to the radially inner end of pistons that are fixedly mounted in circumferentially spaced relation to a circular piston chassis positioned radially outward of the cylinders. A cylindrical bore formed in the cam is partitioned into a pressure chamber and an exhaust chamber by a shoe seal member.

  • Patent number: 4589328
Abstract: A rotary piston engine capable of operating as a fluid pump or motor having a stationary housing in which is concentrically mounted an outer rotatable member to which two pairs of diametrically opposed pistons are fixedly secured and project radially inwardly to each be received in a reciprocating cylinder. The opposed cylinders of each pair of cylinders reciprocate unitarily and the radially inner ends of such cylinders are slidingly and sealingly contacting the adjacent flat surface of a square cam drivingly connected to a rotatable shaft; the cylinders moving in a translatory manner on the flat cam during rotation of the shaft, with the shaft and cylinders rotating unitarily but eccentrically with respect to the outer rotatable member. Suitable ports are provided in the square cam to join the reciprocating cylinders to a source of pressure fluid.

  • Patent number: 4534272
Abstract: A rotating cylinder engine having a stationary housing surrounding a rotating cylinder block, which cylinder block rotates unitarily but eccentrically with an output shaft. The housing rotatably mounts both the shaft and the cylinder block. The cylinder block has four equally spaced cylinders therein with each cylinder reciprocally receiving therein a piston. The inner ends of each piston are equipped with abutting surfaces and a roller arrangement is mounted cooperatively with each piston and for unitary rotation with the output shaft. The rollers engage the inner end of the abutting surface on the piston to facilitate relative translatory movement between the pistons and the output shaft which occur during eccentric movement of the cylinder block and the output shaft while transfering driving force between the piston and the output shaft. Passage means in the housing allows pressure fluid therein to flow from a source external of the housing to impose driving loads upon the pistons.

  • Patent number: 4531360
Abstract: A general purpose fluid displacement device for use as an external combustion engine, a compound expansion engine, a hydraulic pump, or as an air compressor. At least one bank of circumferentially spaced pistons are operably connected to and radially disposed about a rotor member that is eccentrically disposed to an imaginary circle collectively defined by said pistons such that the amount of eccentricity of said rotor determines the throw of said pistons as the pistons orbit the rotor attendant operation of the device.

  • Patent number: 4503754
Abstract: A rotating cylinder engine having a stationary housing surrounding a rotating cylinder block which rotates unitarily but eccentrically with an output shaft. The housing rotatably mounting both the shaft and the cylinder block. The output shaft has cam flats cooperatively positioned with cylinders in the cylinder block; the cylinders having sealed outer ends. A piston is slideable in each cylinder with its inner end sealingly and slidingly engaging an associated cam flat. Fluid passages in said cam flats alternate from a source of pressured air and from an exhaust. The pistons have a central bore therein confluent with the fluid passages in the cam flats so that pressure can flow through the piston and react between the outer ends of the cylinders and the cam flats, and the cylinder block and the cam flats rotate unitarily but eccentrically. In one embodiment, bridle rings hold the pistons on the cam flats.

  • Patent number: 4458480
Abstract: An external combustion engine has at least two axially spaced banks of radially disposed cylinders formed in a rotating engine block. A reciprocating piston is mounted in each cylinder. The block is rotatably mounted in an external engine housing and rotates about a first axis. A drive shaft is rotatably mounted in the external housing along a second axis parallel to but displaced from the first axis. The drive shaft extends through the central portion of the engine block and has a polygonal cross section with as many faces as there are pistons in each bank. Each piston engages a respective face of the polygonal drive shaft so that as the drive shaft and the engine block rotate together, the relative eccentric motion therebetween causes the pistons in each bank to reciprocate within their respective cylinders. A first bank of pistons is dedicated to the intake and compression of air drawn in from an air intake port in the external housing.

  • Patent number: 4455125
Abstract: A fluid pressure device of the type having reciprocating pistons disposed in associated cylinders formed in an engine block that rotates conjointly with a drive shaft mounted eccentrically to the spin axis of the engine block. The length of the piston strokes is determined by the offset distance between the spin axis of the engine block and the spin axis of the drive shaft, said respective axes being parallel to one another. At least two axially spaced banks of radially disposed pistons and complementally formed cylinders are provided and base plate means serve to rigidly interconnect axially adjacent pistons of the respective banks. Axially spaced bridle rings retain the opposed ends of the base plates and serve to rigidly interconnect diametrically opposed pairs of pistons. Openings formed in a stationary cylindrical housing transiently align with the rotating cylinders to provide the valving means for the device.
