Abstract: A method of determining 3D coordinates of a reference point comprises positioning a targeting device comprising an elongated rigid rod having an end point and first and second scanning targets affixed to the rod, the targeting device positioned such that the end point contacts the reference point; scanning the targeting device; determining, using the scan data, (i) 3D coordinates of the center point of the first target and (ii) 3D coordinates of the center point of the second target; and calculating 3D coordinates of the end point based on (i) the 3D coordinates of the center point of the first target, (ii) the 3D coordinates of the center point of the second target, (iii) a distance between the center point of the first target and the end point, and (iv) a distance between the center point of the second target and the end point.
