  • Patent number: 11274831
Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle for a combustion turbine engine has thermal stress-relief vanes, which accommodate and relieve localized thermal stresses within its monolithic, three-dimensional nozzle structure, imparted by heat transfer during engine combustion. At least one first vane is coupled to opposing, spaced nozzle sleeves at both ends. At least one cantilever-like second vane is coupled to one of the opposing sleeves on one end, while the other free or floating end is spaced by a second vane gap from the other opposing sleeve. Some embodiments include a plurality of second vanes, which have locally varying orientation, and/or structure, and/or second vane gaps, for normalizing spatially and/or temporally thermal stresses within the nozzle structure. The monolithic structure is fabricated, in some nozzle embodiments, by additive manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 11125437
Abstract: A method for staging premixers in a combustion system for a gas turbine having a compressor section and a turbine section. The method includes providing a plurality of burners each including premixers wherein compressed air from the compressor section is provided to the premixers. The method also includes providing a plurality of fuel circuits that deliver fuel to the premixers to provide premixed air and fuel used for combustion in the combustion system. In addition, the method includes associating premixers with each fuel circuit in accordance with a power of base two pattern. Further, the method includes activating or deactivating the premixers in stages by activating or deactivating an associated fuel circuit to deliver fuel or stop fuel delivery, respectively, to the premixers wherein a staging step size between consecutive stages is in accordance with a power of base two staging scheme.

  • Patent number: 10603866
Abstract: Auxetic structures, low porosity auxetic sheets, systems and devices with auxetic structures, and methods of using and methods of making auxetic structures are disclosed. An auxetic structure is disclosed which includes an elastically rigid body with a plurality of apertures extending through the elastically rigid body and a plurality of protrusions projecting from the elastically rigid body. The apertures and protrusions are arranged in an engineered pattern, such as an array of rows and columns. The apertures are cooperatively configured with the protrusions to provide a predefined porosity while exhibiting stress reduction through negative Poisson's Ratio (NPR) behavior under macroscopic planar loading conditions. In some embodiments, the protrusions, which are elliptical or semispherical dimples, are interposed in square or hexagonal patterns with the apertures, which are S-shaped through slots or circular boreholes.
