Abstract: In a first embodiment of the present invention, a method for operating a multi-platform application player on a device is provided, comprising: receiving an indication of a first application to run on the device; determining a platform required for the first application to run; identifying a first application player suitable for running an environment compatible with the determined platform, wherein the first application player is capable of running the first application as well as one or more other applications created for the determined platform; loading the first application player in the multi-platform application player; and running the first application in the first application player in the multi-platform application player on the device.

Abstract: A method and system for multi-user, multi-device content access metering and control is provided. In one embodiment, a system implements a method such that in response to user login requests, the system controls login access by providing multiple users login access to plural electronic devices capable of communicating via a communication system. Further, in response to user content access actions, the system controls access to content by selectively providing content to said one or more users via said one or more electronic devices based on content access policies.

Abstract: Multiple user, multiple login access to electronic devices in a communication system is provided. In response to user login requests, login access is controlled by providing multiple users login access to plural electronic devices capable of communicating via the communication system. Each electronic device allows multiple users to be logged on or logged off the electronic device concurrently. User profiles and activity are shared between the plural electronic devices.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a document processing device user interface system and method having functional controls specified by device attribute querying. A plurality of components associated with a document processing device is queried, and device information data corresponding to operational characteristics of each component is received in accordance with the query. Device operation data corresponding to a selected document processing operation is then received via an associated user interface and is compared relative to the device operation data. Indicia is generated on the user interface display corresponding to controls of a subset of the components based upon the comparison output. Secondary selection data corresponding to selected indicia on the display is received, and the selected document processing operation is commenced in accordance with the received secondary selection data.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a network document processing device discovery system and method. Multicast address data and local identification data are first stored in an associated storage. A probe message is then received from an associated processing device via an associated network. The probe message corresponds to stored multicast address data. Probe identification data associated with the probe message is then tested with the local identification data. Device data, representing a capability of a document processing device, is then selectively communicated to the processing device according to an output of the testing.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a route-optimized commercial business locator system and method. Location data is first received corresponding to a location of each of a plurality of alternative business locations. Routing data is then received corresponding to a desired travel route of an associated user. Location data of each of the alternative business locations is then compared to the routing data. Distance data is then generated corresponding to the distance of each of the locations from the desired travel route based upon the output of the comparison. A display is then generated corresponding to each of the business locations and their associated distance data.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a document processing device, system, and method having peer device feature discovery and job routing. Electronic document data is received from an associated document processing device, which electronic document data includes data corresponding to an electronic document and instruction data corresponding to a desired document processing operation associated with the document. Data corresponding to available features of the document processing device is compared relative to received instruction data. A prompt is generated to a second document processing device based upon the output of the comparison indicating that the document processing device has insufficient capabilities for performing the desired operation. Response data is received from the second device corresponding to capabilities of the second document processing device relative to the desired operation, and the electronic document data is routed to the second device in accordance with received response data.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a system and method for a system and method for providing remote service to functionally constrained data processing devices. A server first receives feature identification data representing available services requested from each of a plurality of data processing devices. Instructions corresponding to each of the available services is then stored in association with the server. The feature identification data is then tested so as to determine whether the feature is available locally or requires access to an associated data repository, such as the Internet. The instructions associated with each received feature identification data are then processed so as to complete a corresponding service. The associated repository is then accessed when the result of the testing indicates that the feature is not available locally. Thereafter, result data associated with each requested service is then communicated to the data processing device associated with the service request.

Abstract: A system and method for automated selection of a wireless document processing device. Data representing a plurality of available document processing devices is first generated on a wireless data processing device. The wireless data connection is then detected between a portable data device and an associated access point, wherein the access point is associated with at least one of the available document processing devices. Next, the at least one available document processing device is set as the default selection for performing document processing operations based on the detected wireless connection between the portable data device and the wireless access point associated with the at least one document processing device.

Depending upon the outcome of the testing by the document processing device, the received configuration data is transferred to at least one additional document processing device via a computer network.

Abstract: The subject application is directed to a system and method for secure sharing of configuration cloning information for document processing devices. A document processing device first receives configuration data corresponding to a configuration to be implemented by the document processing device. The document processing device then commences document processing operations in accordance with the received configuration data. The received configuration data is then encrypted using a unique encryption key. Preferably, the encryption key is unique to a node associated with a document processing device. The document processing device then commences the selective transfer of the encrypted configuration data to at least one additional document processing device via the computer network. The receiving document processing device decrypts the encrypted configuration data and then is configured in accordance with the decrypted configuration data.

Abstract: A system and method for the automatic secondary mode facsimile transmission notification of a facsimile recipient or facsimile sender. The sender of a facsimile transmission selects a designated recipient and, when required, selects primary destination data. The sender then selects a secondary mode notification address, associated with the sender, the recipient, or both, whereby a facsimile status message is transmitted to the notification address. A facsimile operation is then initiated on a sending document processing device, whereby facsimile data is generated and transmitted to a receiving document processing device. The sending document processing device then generates status data representative of the status of the facsimile transmission, e.g., duration, success, failure, time, date, etc. This status data is incorporated in a predetermined message format, e.g., electronic mail, SMS message, text message, pager message, and transmitted to the designated notification address.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for implementing hierarchical storage of information. The system comprises a hierarchical repository having at least two levels. The first level comprises a folder and a markup language based file within the folder for storing information. Also stored within the folder is a second level folder which also has a markup language based file stored within the folder. In order to access the repository, a user interface is provided.

Abstract: A method for coordinated startup of document processing service functions. The method begins with the retrieval of descriptor data for each of a plurality of document processing service functions. The descriptor data includes dependency data representing dependencies between document processing service functions. A startup sequence is then calculated for each of the document processing service functions according to the retrieved descriptor data. Next, the calculated startup sequence is outputted so as to commence a coordinated startup of each of the document processing service functions.

Abstract: A system and method for automated selection of a wireless document processing device. Data representing a plurality of available document processing devices is first generated on a wireless data processing device. The wireless data connection is then detected between a portable data device and an associated access point, wherein the access point is associated with at least one of the available document processing devices. Next, the at least one available document processing device is set as the default selection for performing document processing operations based on the detected wireless connection between the portable data device and the wireless access point associated with the at least one document processing device.

Abstract: A method and system for enabling the sponsorship of document processing services. A document processing service request is submitted by an associated user. At least one sponsor, associated with the document processing service request is then identified and communicated to the user. Terms and conditions regarding the sponsorship of the request are then presented to the user for acceptance. The terms and conditions include restrictions on the number of pages, size and color, as well as the placement of an advertisement on the output. The advertisement is in the form of a banner, watermark or reverse-side image. Once accepted, the advertisement is inserted into the request and the selected operation is performed. The fees associated with the request are then calculated and charged to the sponsor. When only partial payment is authorized by the sponsor, the user is charged for the remaining fees.

Abstract: A system and method for authenticating document processing transactions wherein the transaction is rejected if the user is not within a selected geographical region. A transaction request is first received representing a request for the completion of a selected transaction associated with a selected user. Preauthorized geographic region data, associated with the selected user, is then received indicating from where the associated user is allowed to request transactions. Location data representing the source of the transaction request is then received and tested against the preauthorized geographic region data. The result of this testing determines whether the requested transaction is authorized.

Abstract: A system and method to track and display the status of an electronic document submitted through a web-portal to a multifunctional peripheral device. The multifunctional peripheral device receives an electronic document file upon which it is to perform a service and logs the receipt in a central status database. During the processing of the electronic document file, the multifunctional peripheral device continually updates the status information corresponding to that file in the central status database. Through a web-portal, a user selects from a list of recently submitted document files one file for which status information is desired. The multifunctional peripheral device then accesses the central status database, retrieves the file, and displays, via the web-portal, detailed document and status information corresponding to the selected document file.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a system and method for the encryption of image data in a networked environment. More particularly, this invention is directed to a system and method for encrypting documents or data generated via an associated image generating device.
