Abstract: Content to be served is authored by authoring a layout document which defines at least one area of a document which includes the content to be published and authoring at least one binding element which defines the identity and location of at least a portion of content and at least one style description which defines a style to be applied to a selected portion of content. Authoring of the layout document includes allocating to the at least one defined area a director to at least one binding document of the or each binding element such that when processed the published document includes in the defined area the content as directed by the binding element in the style as directed by the binding element. An appropriately programmed computer can generate such servable content, which can be served by, for example, a web server.

Abstract: A method of delivering data to one or more data-handling devices, the method comprising the steps of: storing data that is intended for transmission to the data-handling device according to a predetermined template which provides a plurality of fields each of said fields being capable of containing a portion of the data; providing mappings that map the data within the fields of the predetermined template to fields within alternative templates should it be determined that the data-handling device is not capable of handling data held in the predetermined template; and transmitting the data to the data-handling device.

Abstract: A method of delivering data stored within a network to two or more data-handling devices having different data handling capabilities, the method comprising the steps of authoring the data to produce authored data and storing it in at least one location within the network, generating adapted data by adapting the authored data by at least structuring the authored data to provide at least a preferred and an alternative version of the adapted data, each version suitable to make the data suitable for handling by at least one of the at least two data-handling devices, storing the adapted data at a location within the network and upon receipt of a request for the data, augmenting one of the preferred or alternative versions of the adapted data with dynamically generated data and delivering the adapted data augmented with the dynamically generated data to at least one data-handling device.

Abstract: A method of generating data suitable for transmission to at least one of a predetermined combination of at least a first and a second data-receiving device, said method comprising providing identifiers associated with portions of said data, and arranged to identity that portion of the data, and selecting portions of the data for transmission to at least one of said data-receiving devices depending upon rules for the predetermined combination of first and second data-receiving devices that specify to which device a portion of the data having a predetermined identifier should be sent. Such a method may allow a pair of data receiving devices to be used as a pair of devices rather than as two separate data-receiving devices.

Abstract: Content from a web page, such as text, music graphics etc. is assimilable by a plurality of classes of device, such as PDA, mobile phone and desktop computer. The content is initially authored to include machine readable structural information reflecting structure in the substance of the content, such as chapters, and instructions on the preferred manner the author wishes to see the content presented to the author. This structure is embedded in the content using a device independent markup language. The structured content is then filtered for different classes of device to remove aspects of the preferred presentation which are not possible to replicate on a particular class of device, and the markup code is then modified where appropriate to tranform and instructions not supported by the device on which the content is to be manifested.

Abstract: A method of generating data suitable for transmission to at least one data-receiving device, said method comprising the following steps: specifying said data in a first and a second portion, said first portion being substantially independent of any formatting, and said second portion containing said formatting for said first portion specified in a platform independent manner; transforming said second portion, using a first transform, to generate a platform dependent portion containing said formatting specified in a platform dependent manner; and combining said first portion with said platform dependent portion using a second transform to generate said data suitable for transmission to said at least one data-receiving device. This method may be suitable for generating data suitable for transmission to a variety of platforms including WML, HTML, XSL-FO, etc. based devices.

Abstract: A method of generating data suitable for transmission to at least one data-receiving device said method comprising: specifying the data in at least a first, data-receiving device independent portion; where appropriate modifying said first portion according to a set of predetermined rules which define how said first portion should be divided for display on a predetermined data-receiving device to generate a modified first portion arranged to generate a plurality of divided portions when displayed on said data-receiving device; generating instructions as to how the divided portions are inter-related; and generating a data-receiving device specific document from said modified first portion.
