  • Publication number: 20220345693
Abstract: Coding mode information of a current block is propagated to neighbor blocks even when the coding mode is not selected for a current block. Such propagation may be limited, for example to one block only or to multiple generation of copies. Different propagation modes are proposed: left to right direction, top to bottom direction, bottom-right diagonal direction, first available information, or last coded information. The coding mode propagation allows to improve further predictions since a further block will benefit from the information from its neighbors.

  • Publication number: 20220303535
Abstract: A lossless coding mode is proposed in a video coding system comprising a plurality of coding tools, some being lossy by design, some of which can be adapted to become lossless or near lossless. To enable a lossless mode in such system, it is proposed to disable the tools that are lossy by design and use only lossless tools, to adapt some tools to enable lossless coding, and adapt some tools to enable near-lossless coding so that a secondary lossless coding may be applied after residual coding. In a specific embodiment, it is proposed to determine the type of residual coding by, when an information indicates that a transform skip residual coding is used, obtaining a flag representative of a special mode, and when this flag is true, determine that regular residual coding must be used instead of the transform skip residual coding that should be used.

  • Publication number: 20220264147
Abstract: An apparatus for encoding or decoding blocks of a current picture encodes sub-blocks of a first block of a current picture. The sub-blocks encoded or decoded based on motion vectors determined according a motion information data associated with the first block. In a second step, a set of second motion information data is determined as a function of the first motion information data. These second motion information data are added to a list of motion information data, that is used to determine a motion information data for further blocks of the current picture to encode or decode.

  • Patent number: 11412220
Abstract: A block of video data is split using one or more of several possible partition operations by using the partitioning choices obtained through use of a texture-based image partitioning. In at least one embodiment, the block is split in one or more splitting operations using a convolutional neural network. In another embodiment, inputs to the convolutional neural network come from pixels along the block's causal borders. In another embodiment, boundary information, such as the location of partitions in spatially neighboring blocks, is used by the texture analysis. Methods, apparatus, and signal embodiments are provided for encoding.

  • Patent number: 11381822
Abstract: When dependent scalar quantization is used, the choice of the quantizer depends on the decoding of the preceding transform coefficient, and the entropy decoding of a transform coefficient depends on quantizer choice. To maintain high throughput in hardware implementations for transform coefficient entropy coding, several decision schemes of the scaler quantizer are proposed. In one implementation, the state transition and the context model selection are based on only regular coded bins. For example, the state transition can be based on the sum of the SIG, gt1 and gt2 flags, the exclusive-or function of the SIG, gt1 and gt2 flags, or based on only the gt1 or gt2 flag. When a block of transform coefficients is coded, the regular mode bins can be coded first in one or more scan passes, and the remaining bypass coded bins are grouped together in another one or more scan passes.

  • Publication number: 20220141466
Abstract: In one implementation, the CCB counting methods are unified between the transform residual coding process and Transform Skip (TS) residual coding process. In one example, in TS residual coding, the CCB counting excludes the coeff_sign_flag so that syntax used for CCB count is unified for the two residual coding processes. In addition, a separate maximum number of context coded bins can be specified and used for coeff_sign_flag only. In another example, in TS residual coding, the maximum number of CCB count is reduced from TB_size*2 for a TB to TB_size*1.75, or more generally both the maximum CCB counts of the transform residual coding and TS residual coding are set to an identical value, so that the maximum CCB count is unified for the two residual coding processes.

  • Patent number: 11310505
Abstract: A significance-coefficient flag indicates whether a given quantized transform coefficient is equal to zero or not. To encode the significant-coefficient flags, context-based entropy coding can be used. To adapt to the characteristics of a video sequence, the context model is selected based on the statistics of the transform coefficients. In one embodiment, the non-zero probabilities of transform coefficients are compared to different thresholds to divide a transform block into several context regions, where all coefficients in a context region use the same set of context models. In another embodiment, the transform block is first divided into several context regions based on the positions of the transform coefficients, and the non-zero probabilities of transform coefficients are compared with a threshold to divide each context region into two sub-regions, where all coefficients in a sub-region share the same set of context models.

  • Publication number: 20220103811
Abstract: In some coding modes, such as the merge mode, a list of motion candidates is generated using spatial or temporal neighboring blocks or constructed ones, and one of the motion candidates is inherited by the current block. When constructing the list of motion candidates, motion information of a candidate to be added is checked to limit the redundancy in the constructed list. In one implementation, the switchable interpolation filter, the IFindex becomes part of the motion information to be used in comparison since it can modify the resulting prediction. Furthermore, the GBiIdx indicating the weights used in bi-prediction can also be part of the motion information to be compared and could also be taken into account in the redundancy check. In general, all or part of motion information that causes different prediction can be used in redundancy check.
