  • Patent number: 11956436
Abstract: A method of performing intra prediction for encoding or decoding uses multiple layers of reference samples. The layers are formed into reference arrays that are used by a function, such as a weighted combination, to form a final prediction. The weights can be variable, chosen from among a number of number of sets of weights. The prediction is used in encoding or decoding a block of video data. The weights can be determined in a number of ways, and for a given prediction mode, the same weights, or different weights can be used for all pixels in a target block. If the weights are varied, they can depend on the distance of the target pixel from reference arrays. An index can be sent indicating which set of weights is to be used.

  • Patent number: 11947116
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are defined for displaying images on a flexible display in a head-mountable device (HMD). One or more flexible display devices may be inserted in the HMD. The one or more flexible display devices may be constrained by the HMD to take a particular curved form and wrap the field of view (FOV) of images displayed on the one or more flexible display devices for an improved user experience. The display surface of the one or more flexible displays may be divided in display areas, the display areas corresponding to a focus area and a peripheral FOV. Image processing may be differentiated according to display area.

  • Patent number: 11936871
Abstract: A method for reconstructing a picture block is disclosed, wherein the block is predicted using local illumination compensation. The parameters of local illumination compensation are determined according to a selection of reconstructed samples located to the left and above of the current block. In the case where some of them are unavailable, they may be replaced using different techniques.

  • Publication number: 20240056574
Abstract: An improvement in coding efficiency is achieved through restrictions on successive divisions of asymmetric splitting in advanced video coding algorithms, which frequently rely on splitting of a block of video data prior to coding using several transform sizes. Successive divisions of asymmetric splitting are forbidden if an equivalent split can be attained using triple splitting. In an embodiment, a video block is split using successive splits, but the second type of split is dependent on the first type of split.

  • Patent number: 11870975
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing intra prediction for encoding or decoding adds multiple prediction modes to those of prior intra prediction schemes. A horizontal mode, a vertical mode, and a diagonal mode are added. Reference pixels for each of the added modes can come from multiple pixel positions away from a block to be encoded or decoded. Reference pixels to the left and above a block are reconstructed from those already coded. Reference pixels from right of, and below, a block are estimated or extrapolated and can be based on other pixels around the block. An index can be sent in a bitstream indicating which prediction was used.

  • Publication number: 20240007665
Abstract: A method of predicting or inferring a piece of information for encoding or decoding uses a predictor from a spatial neighbor, or from a reference picture, instead of predicting or inferring the information, such as a flag for a current block, from a motion predictor block. This procedure can be used in several ways, or used in various motion vector prediction modes, such as Frame Rate Up Conversion or various variations of Advanced Motion Prediction. Other embodiments provide other methods and combinations to derive or infer motion information to increase coding efficiency.

  • Patent number: 11856184
Abstract: A video encoder or decoder processes portions of video using intra coding and with variable block shapes. Under the general aspects, intra prediction directions are adapted to the block shape or aspect ratio. The general aspects described adaptively replace several conventional angular intra prediction modes with wide-angle intra prediction modes for non-square blocks. The total number of angular directions for any block can remain the same as in prior video coding standards or can be reduced or expanded. To keep the same number of prediction directions, directions along a shorter rectangular edge of a target block are removed but replaced with addition directions along the longer edge of the rectangular target block. For directions with wide angles, reference sample smoothing is performed. Signaling can be provided to inform a corresponding decoder regarding the prediction modes and directions.

  • Publication number: 20230412810
Abstract: Video encoding and decoding using non-rectangular partitioning. An example video decoding method includes: obtaining information identifying a non-rectangular first partitioning of a current block into a plurality of prediction units; determining a second partitioning of the current block into a plurality of transform units, wherein each transform unit is completely spatially contained within a respective one of the prediction units; and decoding the current block according to the non-rectangular first partitioning and the second partitioning. In some embodiments, the scan order of the transform units is determined such that all transform units contained in a same one of the prediction units are scanned before starting to scan transform units that are contained in a different one of the prediction units.

  • Patent number: 11706407
Abstract: At least a method and an apparatus are provided for efficiently encoding or decoding video. For example, a most probable mode (MPM) list comprising a number of intra prediction mode candidates for a current block is obtained depending on a shape of the current block. The current block is then encoded or decoded based on the obtained most probable mode list.

  • Publication number: 20230188713
Abstract: In one implementation, to perform in-loop filtering of a version of reconstructed samples of a block, only a single offset parameter is signaled in the bitstream. Based on the version of reconstructed samples, a pixel-wise weight mask is generated using a neural network. Because the neural network parameters are known at both the encoder and decoder, these parameters need not to be signaled in the bitstream. The single offset parameter scaled by the weighted mask is used to adjust the samples in the block. Thus, even though only a single offset parameter is used, the samples are adjusted by pixel-wise offsets. The neural network may also take other parameters, such as quantization parameters and picture types as input. Further, there can be multiple neural networks that generate different weight masks, where different offsets are signaled and one or more of the neural networks are to be selected for filtering.
