Patent number: 8299761Abstract: Apparatus and method for dense energy storage is disclosed. The inner tube of a multi-wall nanotube is reversibly withdrawn from the outer tube thereof via a facing electrode that is biased with respect to the nanotube by an external voltage source. As the inner tube is withdrawn, the potential energy of the van der Waals field between the inner tube and the outer tube increases, which manifests as a force that is directed opposite to the electrostatic force of attraction between the electrode and the inner tube. The storage apparatus is discharged by decreasing the applied voltage, which enables the van der Waals force to overcome the electrostatic force. As a consequence, the inner tube is drawn back into the outer tube. The electrode and nanotube define a variable capacitor and, as such, the change in capacitance based on movement of the inner tube results in a flow of charge to a load.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2009Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: InterStellar Technologies CorporationInventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Publication number: 20070007393Abstract: A method for propulsion that does not consume fuel. The method involves the modification of the dispersion force (i.e., van der Waals) that arises between particles, such as neutral atoms. The method comprises generating a lifting force by subjecting a plurality of confined particles to a trigger acceleration, exposing the particles to an amount of electromagnetic radiation that is sufficient to induce the lifting force to (1) exhibit relatively long-range interactions and (2) increase the momentum of the particles, and then transferring at least a portion of the increase in momentum to a vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 4, 2005Publication date: January 11, 2007Applicant: InterStellar Technologies CorporationInventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Publication number: 20060027709Abstract: A propulsion system that does not consume fuel. The system operates to modify the dispersion force (i.e., van der Waals) that arises between particles, such as neutral atoms. A lifting force is generated as a result of this modification of the dispersion force. In the illustrative embodiment, the propulsion system includes particles, a particle trap, a source of electromagnetic energy, and a piston.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 4, 2005Publication date: February 9, 2006Applicant: InterStellar Technologies CorporationInventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Patent number: 6920032Abstract: In some embodiments, the illustrative method defines an engine cycle comprising several state changes that allow for a net gain of energy from an underlying source force field. The potential for a net energy gain via the method results from the discovery that a Casimir force system can be rendered non-conservative. This is done by appropriately altering one or more of a variety of physical factors that affect the Casimir force, or by altering any of a variety of environmental factors that affect such physical factors. In various embodiments, the extracted energy is stored, used to power energy-consuming devices or used to actuate a micromechanical device. In one embodiment, the method is implemented using an energy extraction apparatus that comprises two spaced Casimir force-generating boundaries that are operatively coupled to an energy transformation system. The energy transformation system includes a first device that is operable to alter at least one physical factor of the system.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2002Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Inventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Patent number: 6661576Abstract: An article and method for controlling the sign (repulsion or attraction) and magnitude of dispersion forces, such as the Casimir force. In accordance with one embodiment of the present teachings, dispersion forces are controlled by selectively reflecting only those spectral components (i.e., frequencies) at which the random oscillations of the electromagnetic field contribute to the force behavior desired, while substantially suppressing all other spectral components. In one embodiment, the selected spectral components are omni-directionally reflected using photonic band gap materials.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Inventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Patent number: 6650527Abstract: Method and apparatus for modulating the direction and magnitude of the Casimir force between two bodies. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, a repulsive Casimir force is generated by placing two bodies in near-proximity to one another. For one of the bodies, dielectric properties predominate; for the other, magnetic properties predominate. The arrangement further includes a device that alters the dielectric or magnetic properties of the bodies. By altering the dielectric or magnetic properties, the repulsive Casimir force can be made to decrease, then vanish, then reappear as an attractive force. Modulating the Casimir force in such a manner can be used to control stiction in MEMS devices and to accelerate particles, among many other applications.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2001Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Inventor: Fabrizio Pinto

Patent number: 6593566Abstract: A method and apparatus for accelerating and a decelerating particles based on particle surface interactions. In particular, in some embodiments, particles traveling away from a surface are made to travel at either a higher or lower speed than that with which they approached the surface. This change in velocity is effected by prompting the particles to undergo atomic transitions during their interaction with the surface.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2000Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Inventor: Fabrizio Pinto
