Patent number: 8843110Abstract: A communications method that gathers status information on a telematics-equipped vehicle before establishing a mobile-terminated data connection with that vehicle. In general, the communications method sends a status request message to a wireless carrier system that asks for certain status information on a particular telematics-equipped vehicle. After the wireless carrier system gathers the status information, it sends back a status response message. If the status response message indicates that the telematics-equipped vehicle is able to receive certain data-related services, then a mobile-terminated data connection is established and the services are provided. If the telematics-equipped vehicle is unable to receive the data-related services, then attempts are made to identify and resolve the problem.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2007Date of Patent: September 23, 2014Assignee: General Motors LLCInventors: Fahd Z. Laghrari, Kevin R. Krause, Robert J. Myers

Patent number: 8675514Abstract: A system and method for monitoring wireless network performance that provides a real-time detection and identification of problem areas within a wireless carrier's network. The method involves receiving and attempting to fulfill requests for vehicle services data sent via the wireless carrier system between vehicles and a call center or other remote facility. The success or failure of these attempts are recorded and associated with the geographic region in which the vehicle was located during the attempt, and this information for a multitude of vehicles is then analyzed in conjunction with other inputs and stored data to determine whether a particular geographic region is experiencing a wireless service outage or other degradation in performance.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2010Date of Patent: March 18, 2014Assignee: General Motors LLCInventors: Robert J. Myers, Dalia Poulis, Delano K. Kado, Kevin R. Krause, Fahd Z. Laghrari

Patent number: 8265193Abstract: The present invention provides a method for communicating data over a voice channel of a wireless communication system. The method includes receiving a first periodic data signal and modulating the first periodic data signal to produce a second periodic data signal. Modulating the first periodic data signal includes inserting a predetermined silence period into the first periodic data signal at timed intervals to produce the second periodic data signal. The method further includes communicating the second periodic data signal over the voice channel of the wireless communication system. The method of modulating the first periodic data signal may include receiving a control signal that includes parameters for a length of the predetermined silence period and timing of the intervals, modulating the first periodic data signal responsive to the received control signal, and producing the second periodic data signal.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2004Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: General Motors LLCInventors: Sethu K. Madhavan, Fahd Z. Laghrari, James J. Piwowarski

Patent number: 7996235Abstract: A method for acquiring marketing information from a marketing call center. The method involves a setting of a marketing information trigger based on a pre-determined event corresponding to at least one of a vehicle and an in-vehicle telematics unit, and an initiation of a call to the marketing call center to acquire the marketing information in response to an occurrence of the pre-determined event.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2005Date of Patent: August 9, 2011Assignee: General Motors LLCInventors: Fahd Z. Publication number: 20110124338Abstract: A technique and system are provided for executing a delayed geographically specific activation procedure for a telematics unit associated with a vehicle. In an exemplary mode, the method includes first programming a memory of the telematics unit with geographically specific data including at least a location identifier specifying a geographic location and a PRL associated with the specified geographic location. After the vehicle is transported into the geographic location specified by the location identifier, the telematics unit detects that the vehicle is in the specified geographic location and responsively activates a PRL associated with the specified geographic location. Having access to the PRL, the telematics unit initiates a number assignment process over a wireless network extending within the specified geographic location via OTASP or a cleared number call, so that the telematics unit is assigned a dialing number associated with the specified geographic location.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 20, 2009Publication date: May 26, 2011Applicant: General Motors LLCInventors: Kevin R. Patent number: 7826944Abstract: A remotely configurable telematics unit cache provides for selective caching of data of interest to a remote caller. The configurable caching system ensures that selected data is available when the vehicle is not in operation and the telematics unit is not powered on. A remote caller can remotely configure the telematics unit cache to selectively store data of interest. Subsequently, the telematics module can accept calls from the caller and the cached information can be pulled. Thus, the configurable cache allows a remote caller to selectively and positively configure the cache to store desired data to be later uploaded without requiring a call-back from the telematics unit and without limiting the cached data to predetermined data groups.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: November 2, 2010Assignee: General Motors LLCInventors: Christopher L. Oesterling, Fahd Z. Laghrari, Carl J. Hering

Patent number: 7310521Abstract: A method for recognizing an attempted data connection in a wireless network between a telematics unit and a call center using a modem. During the connection attempt, a determination is made whether frequencies received through the modem are audio frequencies or data frequencies. The connection is abandoned prior to a time-out if frequencies received through the modem are audio frequencies.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2005Date of Patent: December 18, 2007Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Fahd Z.
