Patent number: 11963691Abstract: A surgical instrument, has an end effector that includes an ultrasonic blade, and a clamp arm that moves relative to the ultrasonic blade from an opened position toward an intermediate position and a closed position. The clamp arm is offset from the ultrasonic blade to define a predetermined gap in the intermediate position between the opened position and the closed position. A clamp arm actuator connects to the clamp arm and moves from an opened configuration to a closed configuration to direct the clamp arm from the opened position toward the intermediate position and the closed position. A spacer connects with the clamp arm to inhibit movement of the clamp arm from the intermediate position toward the closed position for maintaining the predetermined gap between the clamp arm and the ultrasonic blade.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2020Date of Patent: April 23, 2024Assignee: Cilag GmbH InternationalInventors: Ryan M. Patent number: 11903605Abstract: An ultrasonic surgical instrument and method of assembly with a predetermined alignment includes first and second modular assemblies and an electrical lockout. The first modular assembly includes at least a portion of an end effector configured to manipulate a tissue. The second modular assembly includes a transducer power circuit and an activation switch electrically connected to the transducer power circuit. The electrical lockout is electrically connected to the transducer power circuit and configured to inhibit the activation switch from powering the ultrasonic transducer with the first and second modular assemblies misaligned from the predetermined alignment such that the first and second modular assemblies are in a locked-out state. The electrical lockout is further configured to allow the activation switch to power the ultrasonic transducer with the first and second modular assemblies in the predetermined alignment such that the first and second modular assemblies are in an operational state.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2021Date of Patent: February 20, 2024Assignee: Cilag GmbH InternationalInventors: Ryan M. Publication number: 20230285105Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a body, an ultrasonic transducer assembly, and a transducer lock having a lock member configured to move between unlocked and locked positions. The transducer assembly is rotatably mounted along a longitudinal axis within the body such that the transducer assembly is configured to selectively rotate about the longitudinal axis. With the lock member in the unlocked position, the transducer assembly is configured to be selectively rotated about the longitudinal axis relative to the body. With the lock member in the locked position, the transducer lock is configured to seize the transducer assembly and inhibit rotation relative to the housing for coupling with an acoustic waveguide. The surgical instrument may also include an integral torque wrench for coupling the acoustic waveguide with a predetermined torque and an integral torque indictor for signaling to a user that the acoustic waveguide is coupled with the predetermined torque.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2023Publication date: September 14, 2023Inventors: Eric Roberson, William D. Publication number: 20120230366Abstract: The present invention is an optical digital thermometer, the novel non-contact digital optical thermometer is based on quantum theory of lightwaves, it can replace the conventional non-contact thermometers that are based on Planck's Law of Blackbody Radiation. The said invention points out four aspects of misunderstandings regarding relationship between temperature (thermal energy) and wave energy of a subject emulated by Boltzmann, Wien, Planck, Rayleigh, Hopkins and other scientists 130 years ago, namely: (1) the temperature of an object is not evenly distributed; (2) lack the awareness of logarithmic distribution of the energy; (3) the fact that a sensor (a thermocouple) has a limited operation range was ignored; (4) treated variable as a constant, in fact, the Planck constant of a materials is not a true constant. These errors result in incorrect temperature measurements, and causes huge waste of energy and technology failures.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2011Publication date: September 13, 2012Inventors: Yaosheng Chen, Fajian Zhang, Qiao Chen
