  • Patent number: 8112866
Abstract: A method for resisting pivoting movement between an outer member and an inner member of a universal joint includes engaging the outer member with the inner member in a chamber for pivoting movement through a first range of movement with a plurality of balls disposed in a plurality of inwardly facing grooves of the outer member and a plurality of outwardly facing grooves of the inner member to transmit rotation between the outer member and the inner member. The method includes enclosing the chamber portion with a boot having a plurality of convolutions defined by roots extending radially inward and resisting pivoting movement of the inner member relative to the outer member with an inner surface of a root contacting a shaft portion of the inner member upon the inner member and the outer member pivoting beyond the first range of movement.

  • Patent number: 7950669
Abstract: The invention provides a method that can be applied, for example, to seal a constant velocity joint. The invention includes a method comprising the steps of substantially sealing the constant velocity joint with the primary boot which includes first and second ends, fixedly associating the first end of the primary boot with the constant velocity joint, and slidably associating the second end of the primary boot with the shaft which extends from the constant velocity joint. In one aspect, the invention includes a primary boot having a body defining a substantially smooth interior surface and a secondary boot associated with the primary boot and spaced from the interior surface. In another aspect, the invention includes a constant velocity joint having an outer joint member, an inner joint member positioned in the outer joint member, a plurality of ball members positioned between said outer and inner joint members, and a shaft engaged with and extending from the inner joint member.

  • Publication number: 20090048029
Abstract: The invention provides a boot for a universal joint. The boot includes a first sleeve portion defining a first circular opening. The boot also includes a second sleeve portion spaced from the first sleeve portion along a boot axis. The second sleeve portion defines a second circular opening having a smaller diameter than the first circular opening. The boot also includes a plurality of convolutions defined along the boot axis between the first sleeve portion and the second sleeve portion by a plurality of roots extending radially inward toward the boot axis and by a plurality of crests extending radially outward away from the boot axis. The plurality of roots includes a first root and a second root immediately adjacent to one another. The first root is closer to the first sleeve portion than the second root. The first root extends radially further toward the boot axis than the second root.

  • Publication number: 20060189396
Abstract: The present invention provides a driveline assembly for transferring power from a vehicle transmission to a driveline component, such as a transfer case or differential. The driveline assembly comprises a drive shaft having a first end configured for operatively coupling to the vehicle transmission. A constant velocity (CV) joint assembly is mounted to a second, opposite end of the drive shaft. More specifically, the joint assembly includes an outer race welded to a tubular member of the drive shaft and an inner race disposed within the outer race. A plurality of torque-transmitting balls are disposed between the inner and outer races to transmit torque from the outer race to the inner race and on to the driveline component. The inner race is configured for mating with a secondary shaft coupled to the driveline component.
