Abstract: An elevator system (201) includes an elevator car (203), a controller (215), a position reference system (234; 213) configured to provide a position of the elevator car (203) and at least one safety device (230) configured to indicate a potential hazard within the elevator system (201). When the actual position of the elevator car (203) cannot be determined using the position reference system (234), the controller (215) is configured to calculate at least one potential position of the elevator car (203) based on an assumed motion profile (237). The controller is configured to allow the elevator car (203) to move whilst no safety device (230), which corresponds to the at least one potential position of elevator car (203) is triggered and to stop movement of the elevator car (203) when a safety device (230) which corresponds to the at least one potential position of the elevator car is triggered.

Abstract: An elevator system includes an elevator car moveable between a plurality of landings and a brake configured to stop the elevator car from moving within the elevator shaft. The system includes a safety controller and at least one safety device. The safety controller monitors for a change in status of the at least one safety device. Upon detection of a change to a new status, the safety controller evaluates whether the new status is a first status corresponding to an emergency situation or a second status corresponding to a non-critical change. The safety controller is further configured to apply the brake immediately to stop the elevator car when the new status is a first status or allow the elevator car to move to a landing when the new status is a second status.

A rescue storage device provides power to the elevator system when the primary source of electrical power is unavailable. The rescue storage device is coupled to an output of the power supply to provide additional DC power with the DC power when the primary source of electrical power is available and an increased power requirement is present.

Abstract: An elevator car is constructed and arranged to move along a hoistway defined by a stationary structure. The elevator car includes a cabin and a component constructed and arranged to be in motion with respect to the cabin. A generator is carried by the cabin and is mechanically coupled to the component for driving the generator as the elevator car moves along the hoistway. An energy storage device of the elevator car is carried by the cabin and is configured to be charged by the generator. An electrical load of the elevator car is powered by at least one of the energy storage device and the generator.
