  • Patent number: 8257003
Abstract: A side actuated collet lock mechanism includes a collet; a drawbar at least partially disposed within the collet, and a pair of wedge members threadingly received onto each end of a double-ended drive screw. The drive screw is rotated to cause the wedge members to move downward such that a first cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and collet are pulled into the tool holder and firmly secure the shank. To remove the shank, the drive screw is rotated in an opposite direction to cause the wedge members to move upward such that a second cam surface engages the drawbar. The drawbar and the collet are pushed out from the toolholder, thereby releasing the shank.

  • Patent number: 7625161
Abstract: A tool shank and a replaceable cutting insert are provided for a rotary cutting tool assembly. The tool shank has a drive surface including a central portion, a first portion of generally planar shape extending away from the central portion and a second portion of generally planar shape extending away from the central portion in a direction generally transverse to a central axis of the tool shank. The replaceable cutting insert has a driven surface including another central portion, a first portion of generally planar shape extending away from the other central portion and a second portion of generally planar shape extending away from the other central portion in a direction generally transverse to a central axis of the insert. The central portion of the driven surface has a curved surface transitioning between the first portion and the second portion of the driven surface.

  • Patent number: 7367763
Abstract: A shrink fit tool holder includes a shank or body that includes a tool holder portion, a flange member, a tapered outer surface that generally corresponds to a tapered bore of a spindle, and a central bore or aperture for accommodating a cutting tool. The central bore includes a plurality of grooves formed in a predetermined pattern that decrease a surface contact area between the tool holder portion and the cutting tool, thereby reducing an amount of conductive heat transfer between the tool holder portion and the cutting tool. As a result, there is less expansion in the tool shank relative to the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 7309196
Abstract: A drill having a replaceable cutting head, modified to eliminate forces which would distort the pocket of the drill shank and otherwise concentrate stresses which would cause failure of the drill. The cutting head has a frustoconical depending connecting member received in a receptacle formed in the shank. In different embodiments, contact between the pocket formed in the shank and the cutting head connecting member is limited. In one embodiment, angle of drive surfaces is modified from prior art practice. In another embodiment, transition of at curved joints between vertical and horizontal surfaces is made more gradual. The drill preferably has flutes formed collectively by the shank and cutting head when assembled.

  • Patent number: 7112020
Abstract: A cutting tool has a shank with a cylindrical portion that is adapted to fit closely within a tool holder. The shank is adapted to be engaged by a setscrew of the tool holder at a first contact point. A clearance surface is provided opposite the first contact point. The clearance surface terminates adjacent two circumferentially spaced points that make contact with the tool holder upon tightening the setscrew. These contact points are circumferentially spaced from the first contact point angular distances greater than 90 degrees and less than 270 degrees.
