  • Patent number: 4700107
Abstract: An electrode head for a high-pressure discharge lamp consists of tungsten sheet material formed as a flat or curved plate having an elongated end face having a transverse dimension at least three or five times the plate thickness. As a result the discharge arc terminates practically in pointed form on the electrode end face, and the electrode is heated relatively slightly but has a large surface for thermal emission.

  • Patent number: 4696996
Abstract: Polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols, which possess alkyl substituents in the two ortho-positions and, if desired, in the meta-position, but not in the para-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. and under from 1 to 10 bar in the presence of a catalyst complex, of a solvent and, if required, of an activator, by a method in which the conversion of the phenols is carried out in two more reaction zones, in which some or all of the solvent, the catalyst complex and the phenols and, where relevant, the activator is initially taken and is circulated by means of a conveying unit, and about 60-100% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for the oxidative coupling is introduced into the first reaction zone and from 0 to about 40% of the said stoichiometric amount is introduced into the second reaction zone.

  • Patent number: 4695201
Abstract: The Removable Bottom Founded Structure (RBFS) is an offshore platform for petroleum drilling and producing operations intended for deployment in waters with severe weather and iceberg conditions. It is a two-part structure comprising (1) a platform which is made up of a deck structure, multiple columns and braces; and (2) a reinforced concrete subbase that rests on the sea floor and upon which the platform is founded. The structure is normally held down by gravity for standard platform operations, but during the deballasting procedure due to an iceberg emergency a hold-down system is employed to keep the platform on the subbase until full deballasting is achieved. The system that is used to hold the platform down onto the subbase is located where the platform meets the subbase. It operates on the principle of hydrostatics. On the underside of the columns there are multiple chambers which may be evacuated by pumping and which are vented to the outside atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4695030
Abstract: A quick release clamp for securing components having a recessed base to a support having spaced internally threaded bores, said clamp having a body portion, a head portion at the top thereof and an outwardly extending lip adjacent the bottom of said clamp for engaging the component recess. A central bore in the body and head portion carries a resilient insert which is slidable therein. An elongated screw is threaded through the insert and receivable in one of the internally threaded bores. Rotation of the clamp as the screw member is threaded into the support brings the lip into locking contact with the component recess and a cammed surface on the bottom of the body into frictional contact with the component. A second cam substantially similar in shape and orientation to the bottom cam is formed on the top of the head and serves to aid in the accurate positioning of the bottom cam.

  • Patent number: 4695661
Abstract: In order to produce pure alpha, omega-C.sub.4 to C.sub.20 alkenols having purities in excess of 90% by dehydrating the corresponding alpha, omega-C.sub.4 to C.sub.20 diols, a catalyst is used which was prepared by using an alkaline earth orthophosphate or alkaline earth hydrogen phosphate or by reacting an alkaline earth compound with phosphoric acid into the corresponding phosphate and then adding an alkali or alkaline earth compound. This catalyst is suitable to be shaped, next it is dried and then calcined at temperatures between 350.degree. and 950.degree. C. The educt dehydration takes place at temperatures between 300.degree. and 500.degree. C. in selective and partial manner to obtain pure alpha, omega-C.sub.4 to C.sub.20 alkenols at conversions exceeding 90%.

  • Patent number: 4695347
Abstract: A process and arrangement for the formation of single crystals from the gas phase, in which the single crystal which is located in the gas phase, and which is in the process of growth originating from only one adhering surface, is subjected to a static temperature gradient between the exposed crystal surface and the surroundings about the crystal. When the crystal which is in the process of growth, within the metastable range of supersaturation is warmer than its surroundings, than homogeneous crystals of larger dimension can be formed. During the formation of HgI.sub.2 (.alpha.) crystals, the crystal is irradiated for purposes of observation with only orange-colored light during the growth process.

  • Patent number: 4693663
Abstract: A hybrid robot (10) for industrial applications comprises an articulated arm assembly (12) pivoted to a turntable assembly (14) mounted for rotation on a base assembly (16). The arm assembly (12) includes an upper arm (26) pivoted to a lower arm (30). A tool adaptor (52) is connected to the upper arm (26) by a wrist assembly (54). A pantograph linkage interconnects the wrist assembly (54), upper arm (26), and lower arm (30) so that the tool adaptor is normally maintained in constant orientation during movement of the arm assembly (12), subject to overriding control by actuators (122, 124). Pivotal movement of the arm assembly (12) is controlled by independent actuators (118, 120) which can be selectively coupled to the arms (26, 30) at different combinations of predetermined points (38, 40, 44, 46, 48) to facilitate adjustment of the work envelope.

  • Patent number: 4691559
Abstract: A guidance arm guides a penetrating body into solid materials. An electromotive drive connected to the guidance arm urges the penetrating body with a specific, but variable force onto the surface of the material. A suspended distance-measuring device has a probe rigidly connected to a backlash-free follower and a metallic substrate with an inert coating connected to the guidance arm. The follower is finely adjusted in the direction of motion of the penetrating body, and is switched off when the penetrating body has been set down onto the material and the distance-measuring device measures a prespecified distance. A voltage output representing the depth of penetration is fed from the distance-measuring device to an electrical evaluation circuit.

  • Patent number: 4691535
Abstract: A yarn-selecting device of a knitting frame comprises a mechanism for joig the yarn being knitted to a selected yarn to be knitted, which mechanism comprises a swivelling finger for forming a closed loop of the yarn to be knitted. Two levers form an open loop of the yarn being knitted and insert it through the closed loop of the yarn to be knitted on the finger. A hooking lever is provided for pulling the yarn to be knitted through the open loop of the yarn being knitted, after which the open loop-forming lever is retracted thus removing the closed loop from the finger, and the yarn being knitted is cut by a knife while the end of the yarn to be knitted is released from a gripper.

  • Patent number: 4691315
Abstract: A backup software program is installed in an isolated portion in the memory of at least one of redundant computers. The backup program performs basically the same functions as the prime program but is dissimilarly programmed to prevent a common software error. Switchover to the backup program occurs either autoamtically in response to monitors, or manually by the operator (i.e. pilot) when he detects an anomaly.
