Patent number: 7213987Abstract: A manually activated, value-metering system having a method and an apparatus for achieving synchronization, wherein the value metering system uses a digital print head to print a plurality of printed lines, one printed line at a time, on a substrate, which is advanced through a print zone of the print head in a moving direction. A mechanical restraint is used to restrict the movement of the substrate through the print zone such that the substrate is allowed to move a fixed distance after the print head has printed one printed line until the last is printed. The fixed distance is substantially equal to the width of one printed line.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2000Date of Patent: May 8, 2007Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Flavio M. Manduley

Patent number: 6956844Abstract: A facsimile machine that is capable of receiving, transmitting and storing both document images and data transfers, identifying the appropriate device the data transfer is intended for, and providing the data transfer to the appropriate device is disclosed. A facsimile machine is provided with one or more ports for coupling with other office equipment, such as, for example, postage meters, postage scales, personal computers, etc. Data transfers from a service center or the like are received by the facsimile machine and identified as to which device is the intended recipient. The facsimile machine can then send the data transfer to the intended device, or store the data transfer for sending to the intended device at a later time. Accordingly, only a single analog telephone line is required for all of the devices coupled to the facsimile machine.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2001Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Daniel F. Dlugos, Flavio M. Manduley

Patent number: 6846120Abstract: A library of simulated-diffraction signals for an integrated circuit periodic grating is generated by generating sets of intermediate layer data. Each set of intermediate layer data corresponding to a separate one of plurality of hypothetical layers of a hypothetical profile of the periodic grating. Each separate hypothetical layer has one of a plurality of possible combinations of hypothetical values of properties for that hypothetical layer. The generated sets of intermediate layer data are stored. Simulated-diffraction signals for each of a plurality of hypothetical profiles are generated based on the stored generated sets of intermediate layer data.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2003Date of Patent: January 25, 2005Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Flavio M. Patent number: 6811237Abstract: A method and apparatus for printing information, such as postal indicia and other information, on a medium. The system is implemented by detecting a type of medium and entering a printing mode as a function of the type of medium detected. The printing mode is either an envelope printing mode or a tape/label printing mode. When in the envelope printing mode, a print module is positioned at a first position, and prints postal indicia data on a first area of the envelope. The print module is then positioned at a second position. Additional data is obtained and the additional data is printed on a second area of the envelope. The print module is then positioned at a third position and recipient address data is obtained and printed on a third area of the envelope. The print module is positioned at a fourth position, and sender address information is obtained and printed on a fourth area of the envelope.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2003Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Flavio M. Manduley

Patent number: 6768790Abstract: This invention is a system and method that provides for the total integration and processing of all possible incoming message types into a single unit at one location. This invention also provides a system to automatically route messages based upon the preferences of the party who received the message. Responses to messages may be kept with the original message so that the status of the message may be maintained. This invention also presents an integrated approach for transmitting messages in all possible media from a single device at one location.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1999Date of Patent: July 27, 2004Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Flavio M. Publication number: 20040112950Abstract: A secure stamp system requires that a purchaser/user of stamps provide identifying information, such as name, address, telephone number, bank account information or biometric information at the time the stamps are purchased. This identifying information may be encoded or encrypted and printed on the stamp while corresponding information is stored in a memory that links the identifying information to an individual. Alternatively, the secure stamp system may have serial numbers printed thereon that are correlated to a purchaser/user. This enables the stamp to be traced to the individual who purchased the stamp. The stamps may have a predetermined operational life afterwhich the stamps are no longer valid.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2002Publication date: June 17, 2004Inventors: Flavio M. Publication number: 20040098354Abstract: Postal metering systems with an external communication link which allows funds to be transferred from one postal metering system to another. The external communication link is provided between the safekeeping device of a first postal metering system to the secure communication device of a second postal metering system so that funds can be transferred through the external communication link from the second metering system from its secure communication device to the safekeeping device of the first postal metering system. Furthermore, when the safekeeping device also stores secure information, secure information can be transferred from the second metering system to the first metering system in the same manner. The safekeeping device and the secure communication device are commonly known as the postal secure device (PSD) and the gatekeeper.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2002Publication date: May 20, 2004Applicant: Pitney Bowes IncorporatedInventor: Flavio M. Patent number: 6584113Abstract: A system for facilitating communication between customer equipment modules and a third party equipment module through use of the data transfer module is described. The data transfer module includes a communication port for communicating with the third party equipment module, as well as ports and a connector for communicating with customer equipment modules. The data transfer module is portable and allows for the transfer of information to and from itself and any customer equipment module while disconnected from the third party equipment module and, likewise, information can be transferred between the data transfer module and the third party equipment module while disconnected from the customer equipment modules. This portability and ability to transfer information to the customer equipment modules without simultaneous communication to the third party equipment module facilitates use of the system when customer equipment modules are not easily accessible to external communication sources.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1999Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Flavio M.
