By filling, the airbag can be moved from a stowed position to a functional position in which the airbag provides impact protection for an upper body of a seat occupant in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle seat. The retaining element has an additional connection region in which the retaining element is coupled to a retaining device of the vehicle seat. The retaining device is spaced apart from the backrest in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle seat.
