  • Publication number: 20220348736
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that involve a subcritical water reaction to recycle the cellulose and polyester components of waste cotton and cotton/polyester blend textiles that would otherwise be discarded or disposed of. Specifically, the disclosed methods provide for treatment of the waste textiles to produce advanced materials including cellulose and terephthalic acid (TPA) with a low environmental impact. The cellulose and TPA that are produced are of a high quality allowing for production of regenerated cellulose and regenerated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) suitable for fiber spinning and textile applications.

  • Publication number: 20200190737
Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter relates to a horizontal reactor system that can be used for processing various plant material biomass to produce fermentable carbohydrates, paper and pulp products, or both. Particularly, the disclosed system comprises a horizontal reactor vessel comprising a body with first and second ends. The reaction vessel is intended to encompass and retain a reaction medium (i.e., biomass slurry) that is to undergo a biological and/or biochemical reaction. The vessel comprises an internal agitator that functions to mix the contents of the reactor. The agitator is powered by a drive, which can be a motor, positioned outside the reaction vessel.

  • Publication number: 20190360070
Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter is directed to a method of hydrothermally treating metallic packaging, metallic labeling material, and scrap metal items. Particularly, the disclosed method initially comprises providing a metallic starting material. The metallic starting material is introduced to a reactor and processed at elevated temperature and/or pressure for a desired amount of time. As a result, the metallic portion of the starting material separates into a distinct layer that can be removed from the remainder of the starting material.

  • Publication number: 20190276983
Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter relates to a method and system of providing customized bioprocessing conditions for a variety of feedstock materials. Particularly, it has been surprisingly found that there is a correlation between the weight percent of lignin, cellulose, and/or hemicellulose and various reaction conditions. The weight percent lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose are used to calculate indexes used to create a process index for sorting the feedstock into categories. A process adjustment factor can also be calculated and used to adjust the reaction conditions for each feedstock material.
