Abstract: Sulphonic acids of bis-styrylbiphenyls, which are useful optical brighteners, are obtained in good yields in a simple manner by reacting styrene compounds with 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl-3,3'-disulphonic acids or their salts in the presence of bases and palladium catalysts.The bis-stilbene compounds have the formula: ##STR1## where at least one of the rings A or B contains a sulfonic acid group.

Abstract: A polymer-bound linkable dye comprisinga) a water-soluble polymer backbone,b) a dye covalently bound thereto, andc) functional groups which enable the polymer-dye to link covalently with biological materials,in which the water-soluble polymer backbone is a copolymer which contains arcylamide, methacrylamide, N-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl(meth)acrylamide, N,N-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 dialkylacrylamide, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpiperidone, N-vinylcaprolactam, N-vinylformamide, N-vinylacetamide, N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide, N-vinyl-O-methylurethane, ethene or vinylmethylether as nonionic monomer blocks. The polymer-bound dye can be linked to a biologically active material such as an antibody or nucleic acid and used analytically.

Abstract: The invention relates to new dicyanoethylaryl derivatives and to processes for their preparation. The compounds according to the invention can be used as redox indicators, such as, for example, for the detection of hydrogen peroxide with the aid of peroxidases or peroxidatively active substances.These redox indicators are futhermore suitable for the detection of peroxidases or peroxidatively active compounds, it also being possible to use other peroxides as oxidizing agents.

Abstract: .beta.-Aminoethyl ketones are obtained in a low-polluting manner by Mannich condensation of an aryl ketone having an acidic H with an aldehyde and ammonia or an amine by carrying out the reaction in organic nitriles in the presence of a sulphonic acid or in gycol either in the presence of a sulphonic acid or sulphuric acid.

Abstract: Triazolylphenyl-triazines of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 denote alkyl or aryl andX.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 denote alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, which are obtainable by reacting corresponding 3-hydroxyphenyl-triazoles with corresponding 2,4-dihydroxy-triazinium compounds, are outstandingly suitable for the preparation of 4-(1,2,3-triazol-2-yl)-salicylaldehydes, which in turn are starting materials for the preparation of optical brighteners of the type of the triazolylcoumarins.

Abstract: Antimicrobial compositions and uses employing benzo-1,2,4-triazines-1,4-di-N-oxides substituted in the 3-position with a substituted amino group and optionally substituted in the benzo ring are described. The compounds utilized, of which 3-(N-acetoacetylamino)benzo-1,2,4-triazine-1,4-di-N-oxide is a typical embodiment, are prepared from the corresponding 2-aminobenzo-1,2,4-triazine-1,4-di-N-oxide through alkylation or acylation.

Abstract: An N-monosubstituted formamide having the formula: ##EQU1## in which R represents an optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical; is prepared by reacting a formaldimine having the formula:H.sub.2 C = N -- Rin which R is as defined above; or a hexahydrotriazine having the formula: ##EQU2## in which R is as defined above, with hydrogen peroxide.
