  • Patent number: 5228332
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a golf putter with a true balance includes the steps of designing or selecting a particular shape and style of putter head and then providing a putter shaft with a substantially straight handle portion and a substantially straight neck portion which are integral with each other and arranged so as to define an included angle therebetween. With the putter and shaft defined, the front-to-rear and end-to-end center of gravity cutting planes are accurately determined as well as their line intersection. The point of attachment for the shaft to the head is then determined so that the longitudinal axis of the handle portion of the shaft passes through the line intersection of the two center of gravity cutting planes. Once the shaft is joined to the head with a slow-setting adhesive, the putter is set on a very flat and level test bed in order to test to see if there is any turning or rotation.

  • Patent number: 4866979
Abstract: A balance-revealing apparatus for testing the balance of golf putters according to the present invention includes a base which is adapted to rest on a generally horizontal surface and an upwardly extending support column rigidly affixed to the base. Disposed in the upper end of the support column is a flanged bearing block and received by the bearing block is a pivot arm. The pivot arm is adjustably attached to a tubular holder which in turn receives the golf putter. The tubular holder is designed such that the putter retained by the holder is able to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the putter shaft such that upon free pendulum swinging of the pivot arm, the squareness of the putter face upon impact with the golf ball can be determined and represents a measure of the true balance or imbalance of the putter.

  • Patent number: 4265451
Abstract: A golf putter for putting a golf ball includes a clubhead having a ball-striking surface, a neck member, and a straight shaft having a grip portion at its proximal end and connecting to the neck member at its distal end. The neck member provides the connecting link between the distal end of the shaft and the top surface of the clubhead and includes a wedge-shaped portion which extends forward of the ball-striking surface. The wedge-shaped portion is segmented into an upper reduced-thickness section and a lower section which is approximately twice the thickness of the upper section. A ledge is created by this difference in thickness and is disposed coincident with the plane of interface between the upper and lower sections. A sighting line groove is located across the top surface of the ledge.

  • Patent number: 4163554
Abstract: A golfing putter for putting in a modified croquet style includes an elongated shaft having an upper grip portion and a lower grip portion and a putter head at the lower end having a striking face. The shaft is joined to the head by means of a connecting neck portion and the primary longitudinal axis of the shaft which diverges from the vertical axis of the head is also at an angle to the striking face. Due to this arrangement and the elongated shaft, the user is able to stand in a substantially upright position with the golf ball out in front of the user's body. By holding the upper grip portion as a pivot point with one hand, the other hand draws the clubhead back in a pendulum swing type of motion. Release by this other hand allows the club to swing downward thereby striking a golf ball.
