  • Publication number: 20050202970
Abstract: Ethidium bromide is a carcinogen. After carrying out relevant DNA or RNA experiments, there is generally produced a waste solution or a pollutant containing ethidium bromide and thus in a laboratory such a waste solution and pollutant must be particularly treated in a way identical to the treatment of poisonous materials. To date, there are several methods for treating the waste solution or the pollutant containing ethidium bromide, but these methods all have their defects. For instance, the treatment method is too complicated, a strong acid and a strong base harmful to humans are used in treatment, the cost for treatment is too expensive, ethidium bromide present in the solution is merely concentrated through physical adsorption and thus the carcinogenicity of ethidium bromide is not destroyed, and after treatment other carcinogens which can not be removed are still produced in a minor amount.
