  • Publication number: 20130220116
Abstract: Various systems and methods are provided for supplying heat to a passenger compartment during a filter regeneration event. In one example, a first phase of a filter regeneration event is initiated for a filter in an internal combustion engine based on one or more parameters, with heat produced by the engine then supplied to a heater core during the first phase, and the first phase extended if heating is requested. The engine may be operated at reduced efficiency during the filter regeneration event, and in some embodiments, the method may further include injecting an additional amount of fuel during a second phase of the filter regeneration event after the first phase ends to cause soot combustion in the filter.

  • Publication number: 20130226420
Abstract: The present disclosure describes systems and methods for controlling the speed of a vehicle comprising: during a pulse phase of cruise control, applying engine torque to raise speed, the amount and duration of which being responsive to engine speed; and during a glide phase of cruise control, discontinuing engine combustion. • Publication number: 20130219865
Abstract: Modification of reductant (e.g., diesel exhaust fluid, DEF) tank location, for example during vehicle up-fitting may result in less than optimal operation of the DEF system due to inaccurate DEF system calibration. In one example approach, the above issue can be at least partially addressed by adjusting control system parameters for system control and diagnostics based on an input indicative of, or any modification to, the DEF tank location. In this way, DEF tank location flexibility is maintained, while also maintaining emission control and diagnostic accuracy.

  • Publication number: 20130213367
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a cylinder head having at least one cylinder. A cover is connected to the cylinder head and covers the cylinder and related valve train components. An exhaust gas turbocharger powered by the engine's exhaust system delivers compressed gasses to the intake system. An exhaust gas recirculation system branches off from the exhaust system downstream of the turbocharger and feeds into the intake system upstream of the turbocharger. A coolant-fed charge air cooler is disposed between the cylinder head and the cover, and at a point that is a geodetically highest point in the intake system when the internal combustion engine is in an installed position. This configuration prevents any liquid that has condensed out of the charge air during cooling from collecting in the cooler and/or in the intake system between the cooler and the at least one cylinder.

  • Publication number: 20130213012
Abstract: Methods for monitoring and detecting undesired exotherms which may occur in an exhaust aftertreatment system coupled to a lean burning combustion engine are described. In one particular approach, an undesired exotherm may be indicated based on an expected oxygen depletion along a length of an exhaust aftertreatment system in the direction of exhaust gas flow of exhaust gas. For example, during DPF regeneration, a certain amount of oxygen is expected to be utilized for removing soot. If less oxygen is actually found in the exhaust downstream of the exhaust system, then an undesired exotherm may be present, as unintended reductant may be present in the exhaust and reacting exothermically with oxygen. Various mitigation actions may then be initiated in response to the indication of an undesired exotherm.

  • Publication number: 20130211698
Abstract: Various systems and methods are described for controlling an engine in a vehicle, the engine being coupled to a transmission. One example method comprises, under selected braking conditions, shutting-off the engine and spinning-down the engine to rest while the vehicle is traveling, and in response to a foot-off-brake event, restarting the engine by at least partially engaging the transmission to assist in spinning-up of the engine from rest while the vehicle is traveling. In this manner, vehicle inertia can be used to assist in spinning-up the engine from rest when the vehicle is moving.

  • Publication number: 20130209354
Abstract: A method of forming a material for reversible hydrogen storage within a storage tank includes charging a mixture of a metal amide and a metal hydride to the storage tank, and chemically reacting the mixture at a reaction condition within the storage tank to form a thermally conducting composite material situated in the storage tank and for reversibly storing hydrogen. The composite material includes a three-dimensional and interconnected framework including a conductive metal. A method for reversibly storing hydrogen includes providing a storage tank and in situ chemically forming a composite material by charging a mixture of a metal amide and a metal hydride to the storage tank and chemically reacting the mixture at a reaction condition to form a thermally conducting composite material including a metal hydride and a substantially unreactive elemental metal framework. Hydrogen is absorbed into the composite material and is desorbed from the composite material.

  • Publication number: 20130211693
Abstract: Methods are provided for controlling an engine. One method may include adjusting airflow to a turbocharger arrangement with a turbine bypass valve bypassing a first turbine from a high-pressure turbocharger and a wastegate bypassing a second turbine from a low-pressure turbocharger; responsive to valve degradation, setting the turbine bypass valve fully open and the wastegate fully closed; and limiting engine torque based on a flow through a compressor of the low pressure turbocharger. In the event of valve degradation, limiting torque may reduce overspeed and surge of the low pressure turbocharger.
