  • Patent number: 5699192
Abstract: Electrochromic devices applied to a substrate are disclosed, including an electrochromic electrode layer, a counterelectrode layer, and an ion-conducting layer sandwiched between those two layers and electrically isolating them from each other, in which the ion-conducting layer is substantially uniform across the substrate and comprises an inorganic superstructure with associated organic material and with a microstructure which facilitates the transfer of ions. Methods for producing these devices are also disclosed, including depositing the ion-conducting layer on the substrate in the form of a solution, and effecting gelation of that solution.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 7, 1995
Date of Patent: December 16, 1997
Assignee: Sun Active Glass Electrochromics, Inc.
Inventors: John E. Van Dine, V. D. Parkhe, Lisa C. Klein, Forrest A. Trumbore

  • Patent number: 5404244
Abstract: The invention provides for the simplified production of chromogenic devices, including relatively large scale devices in panel form. One or more of the layers of the invention are formed from heated, hydrolyzed gel reaction product of one or more dissolved organo-inorganics, such as alkoxides, which may be metallic. The invention includes an ion-conducting layer which comprises a lithium based ceramic material containing residual organic impurities.

  • Patent number: 5321544
Abstract: A chromogenic device with a chromogenic material facing a conductive layer, in which the transmission of incident radiation through the conductive layer and the chromogenic material is enhanced. The enhancement is achieved by adjusting indices of refraction of layers embracing the conductive layer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 4, 1991
Date of Patent: June 14, 1994
Assignee: Sun Active Glass Electrochromics, Inc.
Inventors: V. D. Parkhe, Forrest A. Trumbore, John E. Van Dine
  • Patent number: 4988587
Abstract: A procedure is described for making niobium triselenide for use in nonaqueous cells. The procedure involves synthesis of NbSe.sub.3 from Nb.sub.2 Se.sub.9 which is rapid, easily adapted to manufacturing conditions and yield product with excellent characteristics for lithium cell applications.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 23, 1990
Date of Patent: January 29, 1991
    Assignee: AT&T Bell Laboratories
Inventors: Leonard W. Ter Haar, Forrest A. Trumbore
