Publication number: 20240412669Abstract: A wearable electronic device can include optical assemblies for providing visual output to a user. The optical assemblies can include a central display as well as a light track that surrounds at least a portion of the central display. Primary information and images can be provided at the central display to be received at a center region of a user's vision. Supplemental content and/or information can be provided by operation of the light track, which can be operated with relatively simple controls. The supplemental content and/or information can be received at a peripheral region of the user's vision. Accordingly. the inner and outer images produced by the separate mechanisms of the optical assembly can provide a single continuous image for observation by the user.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2022Publication date: December 12, 2024Inventors: Ivan S. Publication number: 20240280818Abstract: A head-mountable device can include modules that provide vision correction and operable connections between the modules. By providing head-mountable devices with modular features, certain lens assemblies can provide the desired vision correction for any given user and facilitate exchange with a different lens assembly for a different user. The lens assembly can identify itself and/or a feature thereof (e.g., vision correction and/or user identification) via an operable connection through the optical assembly onto which it attaches. By providing the operable connection through the optical assembly, part count, weight, complexity, and install procedures can be reduced. By sealing the cable providing the operable connect from an external environment, the reliability and robustness of the connection can be enhanced.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 14, 2022Publication date: August 22, 2024Inventors: Ivan S. Patent number: 11953690Abstract: Multiple head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices can operate in concert to provide multiple users with shared experiences and content enjoyment. Such operations can be facilitated by a connection between multiple head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices to allow different users to receive content. Such a connection can be made possible by a connector that directly and physically connects head-mounted devices and/or other electronic devices to each other and transmits signals there between. By providing a physical connection, the signals can be efficiently transmitted even when other types of connections (e.g., wireless) are not available.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2023Date of Patent: April 9, 2024Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Forrest C. Publication number: 20240077738Abstract: A system such as a head-mounted device may have left and right displays for displaying images. The images may be presented to left and right eye boxes through left and right fixed (non-removable) lenses and corresponding left and right removable vision correction lenses. The left and right fixed lenses may be supported by left and right fixed lens supports to which the left and right displays are mounted, respectively. To removably attach the vision correction lenses to the fixed lenses, the fixed lens supports and vision correction lenses may be provided with bayonet mounts. The bayonet mounts may have push-and-turn structures such as pins that mate with corresponding slots.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 23, 2023Publication date: March 7, 2024Inventors: Matin Seadat Beheshti, Forrest C Wang, Shirley S Lu

Publication number: 20240077694Abstract: A head-mounted device may include optical assemblies for presenting images to a user. Motors may be used to adjust the spacing between the optical assemblies to accommodate different interpupillary distances. The head-mounted device may have a housing that receives a custom-fit removable light seal with vision correction lenses. A sensor or wireless transceiver in the housing may receive interpupillary distance information from the light seal. Based on this information, the motors may adjust the optical assemblies so that the optical assemblies are spaced apart by an amount that matches the interpupillary distance associated with the user of the custom-fit removable light seal.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2023Publication date: March 7, 2024Inventors: Elias Izpisua-Rodriguez, Wey-Jiun Lin, Forrest C Wang, Yoonhoo Jo

Patent number: 11892701Abstract: A head-mounted device may have optical modules that present images to the user's left and right eyes. The optical modules may move with respect to each other to accommodate different user interpupillary distances. Each optical module may have a lens barrel, a display coupled to the lens barrel that generates an image, and a lens mounted to the lens barrel through which the image is viewable from an eye box. The lens may be a multi-element lens formed from molded lens elements such as molded polymer lens elements. A lens element may be provided with protrusions that form lens tabs. The lens tabs may have coplanar lens tab surfaces that mate with corresponding coplanar mounting surfaces in the lens barrel. Alignment marks may be formed on the protrusions and/or other portions of the lens.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2021Date of Patent: February 6, 2024Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Ivan S. Patent number: 11822145Abstract: An electronic device such as a head mounted device may have a display that displays an image for a user. Head-mounted support structures may be used to support the display and to support lenses. The head-mounted support structures may have one or more lens barrels or other support members. Each lens may have an optical surface and a side surface. Adhesive may be used to attach the lenses to the head-mounted support structures. A first portion of the adhesive may bond each lens to a first respective portion of a support member and a second portion of the adhesive may bond each lens to a second respective portion of the support member. The adhesive may be a non-silicone adhesive that fractures in bulk rather than failing at interfaces with the lens and support member. The elastic modulus of the adhesive may help avoid cracking and plastic deformation during drop events.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2020Date of Patent: November 21, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Ivan S.
