Patent number: 8820411Abstract: A deepwater blow out throttling apparatus and method. The apparatus is sized to reach an equilibrium between the force of the oil flow against the equipment that constitute the apparatus during its assembly and the forces available from the ROV and the drill ship and connexion pipe to hold the pieces in position for assembly. This solution is applicable to all wells and requires sizing the diffusion transition spool and the throttling valves such that the forces of the flow of the free discharging oil can be overcome by the forces available from the ROV and drill ship. Downward loading from the drill ship during the throttling is applied as throttling generates forces and vibration that can exceed the physical strength of the riser piping and connections. Slow closing of the throttling device must be assured to avoid shocking (or water hammering) the oil well installation.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2011Date of Patent: September 2, 2014Assignee: Organoworld Inc.Inventor: Frédérick Churchill

Patent number: 8821117Abstract: A fluid turbine apparatus which is able to increase the fluid velocity and consequently increase the rotation speed of the fluid turbine. The fluid turbine apparatus has a convergent section, a fluid turbine section and a divergent section. The fluid enters into the fluid turbine through the convergent section, passes through the fluid turbine and exits through the divergent section. The combination of the convergent section and the divergent section creates a Venturi effect and increases the fluid velocity and thus the energy density entering turbine for increasing the energy extracted by the turbine.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2009Date of Patent: September 2, 2014Assignee: Organoworld Inc.Inventors: Frédérick Churchill, Jean Perron, Guy Fortin

Publication number: 20120099977Abstract: A directing system for directing fluid entering an axial flow turbine along an inlet flow direction. The turbine includes a plurality of turbine blades. The directing system includes a base structure, a plurality of directing segments attached to the base structure, downstream of the base structure, and a directing segment adjustment system for adjustably positioning the directing segments between a retracted configuration and a deployed configuration. The directing segments, in the deployed configuration, extend beyond the base structure in a direction transversal to the inlet flow direction and deflect the fluid towards an outer circumference of the plurality of turbine blades corresponding to a higher torque area of the blades. A directing system for directing fluid entering a cross-flow turbine is also disclosed. In the cross-flow turbine, the fluid is directed towards a centerline of the rotor of the turbine, which is a high torque area of the turbine blades.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2009Publication date: April 26, 2012Inventors: Frédérick Churchill, Ion Paraschivoiu, Octavian Trifu

Publication number: 20120085612Abstract: Designs introduced to three sectors that relate to the distribution network and support structures for delivering energy and utilities services to buildings, distributed renewable energy generation and its supply to electrical vehicles, and public transportation including roadway services and mass transportation infrastructure, including the application of aerially supported utilities whereby the implementation and distribution of utility and municipal services are now integrated with the objective of a more efficient installation, maintenance and operation. Disclosed is an aerial modular support system that can accommodate all categories of utility services whether handling fluids, solids, energy or digital signals. An electrified roadway power distribution for vehicles, an electrified train in a semi-continuous tunnel and a solar energy collector used to provide electricity and to protect roadways are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2010Publication date: April 12, 2012Inventor: Frédérick Churchill

Publication number: 20120003077Abstract: An annular single or multi-rotor double-walled turbine. The turbine includes an outer shroud, an inner shroud, and a plurality of driveshafts. The turbine also includes a plurality of rotors coaxially attached to the plurality of driveshafts at spaced intervals. Each of the plurality of rotors comprises a plurality of turbine blades extending between the inner and outer shrouds. Each of the plurality of turbine blades comprises a face. The inner shroud and the outer shroud form a continuous channel for directing a fluid entering the turbine towards the faces of the turbine blades and for directing fluid discharged from a first of the plurality of rotors to the remaining rotors. The channel greatly improves efficiency of power extraction from all augmented and non-augmented fluid streams.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 12, 2009Publication date: January 5, 2012Inventor: Frédérick Churchill
