Patent number: 6325547Abstract: The present invention provides an optical connector having a housing assembly comprised of polyphenylsulfone (PPSU). PPSU has several characteristics that make it suitable for use with optical connectors including good flexibility, low sensitivity to molding parameters, good environmental properties, and compatibility with anaerobic adhesives, which are often used to attach the optical fiber to the ferrule in private networks. The connector preferably comprises a one-piece housing, which enhances the side-loading characteristics of the connector. The connector preferably comprises a ferrule assembly and an insert that are housed within the one-piece housing. The insert has a keying mechanism formed thereon that is adapted to mate with a keying mechanism formed in the housing. When the insert is inserted into the first end of the housing, the keying mechanism of the insert interlocks with the keying mechanism of the housing to lock the insert into place within the housing.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Ray R. Cammons, John Francis May, Norman Roger Lampert

Patent number: 6293710Abstract: The present invention provides a connector for terminating an optical fiber. The connector comprises a one-piece housing, a ferrule assembly and an insert. The insert has keys formed thereon that are adapted to mate with keyways formed in the housing. The housing has a first opening formed therein that first receives the ferrule assembly and then the insert and a second opening opposite the first opening. The end of the ferrule assembly that holds the end of the optical fiber protrudes through the second opening. The insert has a flange thereon that has two oppositely located flat surfaces and two oppositely located keys. The keys each have a chamfered surface. The keys and the flat surfaces of the flange provide the flange with a substantially rectangular cross-section. The first opening formed in the housing has a substantially square cross-section.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1999Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Norman Roger Lampert, Elizabeth J. Driscoll, John Francis May, Jeffrey Dale Nielson, Naif Taleb Subh

Patent number: 5979811Abstract: A cable payout tube having a large diameter cable entrance end and an even larger cable exit end, for accommodating stiff cable without kinking thereof. The interior of the tube has cable gripping chambers extending along at least a portion of the length thereof, the chambers being tapered to allow wedging of the end of a cable therein. A flange and locking tabs enable mounting the tube in an opening in a carton containing the cable.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1998Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Benjamin Allen Bass, John Francis May

Patent number: 4510352Abstract: A hollow trolley pole associated with an electrically propelled vehicle has an upper end portion and a lower end portion. A passageway extends downwardly through the trolley pole from the upper end portion to the lower end portion. A trolley wire contact shoe is mounted on the pole upper end portion and slides along an electric power line or trolley wire that is suspended, for example, from a mine roof in an underground mine. An electrical conductor extends from the contact show through the passageway to the lower end portion of the pole which is received within a socket-like connector which is spring mounted in a base member connected to the vehicle frame. The conductor is enclosed within an impact resistant flexible conduit that extends from the passageway in the lower end portion of the pole through the connector and the base member and into a contactor box for connection to a propulsion motor.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1982Date of Patent: April 9, 1985Assignee: Consolidation Coal CompanyInventors: Francis A. Patent number: 4339161Abstract: A drill housing includes an internal chamber with a rotatable drill retaining member positioned in the chamber and extending outwardly through the chamber upper open end portion. A hub member is positioned in surrounding nonrotatable engagement with the drill retaining member. A rotary motor is drivingly connected to the hub member to transmit rotation to the drill retaining member. The drill retaining member has a socket for receiving the shank of a drill steel that rotates with the drill retaining member. A first main bearing rotatably supports the hub member, and a stationary bearing carrier supports the first main bearing. A cover plate surrounds the drill retaining member and rotates with the hub member. A bearing seal is positioned between the cover plate and the bearing carrier to seal the first main bearing. The bearing seal has a rotatable portion that rotates with the cover plate and a stationary portion that abuts the bearing carrier.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1980Date of Patent: July 13, 1982Assignee: Consolidation Coal CompanyInventor: Francis A. Patent number: 4020546Abstract: A cylindrical metallic sleeve has opposite end portions and a cylindrical body portion with a longitudinal passageway for receiving the end portions of a conducting cable in overlapping relation. A shaped annular portion is formed adjacent the sleeve end portions and includes an inner, outwardly flared cylindrical surface and an outer cylindrical surface that intersect in a rounded end portion. The outer cylindrical surface is planar and positioned substantially parallel to the sleeve cylindrical body portion so that the insulation surrounding the cables adjacent the sleeve end portions is not abraded upon flexing the spliced cable. The flared inner surface is removed from contact with the overlapping cable end portions in the sleeve to permit flexing of the cable end portions therein without abrading the cables. The sleeve body is crimped into frictional engagement with the overlapped cable end portions.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1976Date of Patent: May 3, 1977Assignee: Consolidation Coal CompanyInventor: Francis A. Patent number: 3990551Abstract: A closed compartment for storing multi-conductor electric cable on an electrically powered mobile mining machine is secured to and extends laterally from a sidewall of the vehicle. The storage compartment has a slotted opening in the front portion thereof through which the cable is conveyed. A support frame is secured to the conveyor boom of the vehicle and extends outwardly therefrom and forwardly of the storage compartment. A first traction roller is rotatably mounted and fixed on the support frame between pairs of guide members that serve to direct the cable into the storage compartment. A second traction roller is rotatably mounted in spaced parallel relation above the fixed traction roller and is resiliently supported on the support frame by spring members. The cable passes between the rollers, and the springs maintain the rollers in frictional engagement with the cable.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1975Date of Patent: November 9, 1976Assignee: Consolidation Coal CompanyInventors: Will B.
