    Abstract: This invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the production of ammonium nitrate which produce an ammonium nitrate solution of a sufficient concentration, preferably from 90 to 98% by weight using nitric acid solutions of a relatively low concentration. The ammonium nitrate solution is concentrated in a multistage evaporation installation in which at least one evaporator is heated by the steam generated by a depressurization of the ammonium nitrate solution.
