    Abstract: A scroll machine has an intermediate pressure cavity which is operable to open and close a leakage path between the discharge zone and the suction zone of the scroll machine. The leakage path is closed when intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the cavity and the leakage path is open when the cavity is open to the suction zone of the compressor. A valve (102) which can be mechanical or electrical is used to open and close a passageway extending between the cavity and the suction zone of the machine. A high pressure relief valve is incorporated into the design of the compressor to prevent slugging. The high pressure relief valve will release the intermediate pressurized fluid to suction and/or discharge when the pressure within the intermediate pressure cavity exceeds a predetermined value.

    Abstract: A scroll compressor has a fluid brake for resisting and impeding objectionable reverse movement of the orbiting scroll member. The brake includes a one-way clutch interconnecting a drive shaft and a paddle disposed in the compressor oil sump, and optionally a rotor shield for controlling oil flow around the lower end of the motor rotor. A two piece paddle has a rotatable paddle having blades to impart angular momentum to the lubricating oil and a stationary housing having vanes to resist the angular momentum imparted to the lubricating oil by the blades of the rotatable housing.

    Abstract: An improved discharge valve assembly is disclosed for use in refrigeration compressors which includes a combination valve guide and spring retainer extending into a conical discharge gas passage and which includes an annular conical surface positioned in spaced parallel relationship with the sidewalls defining the discharge gas passage. The conical annular surface cooperates with the sidewalls defining the discharge gas passage to provide a diffusing discharge gas flowpath offering improved compression efficiency and sound reduction.

    Abstract: A hydraulic shock absorber having an outer tube which is closed at one end and open at the other end. An inner tube, having a plurality of metering orifices, and having a closed inner end and an open end, is mounted in the outer tube with its closed end against the closed end of the outer tube. A meter tube, having a plurality of metering openings, is rotatably mounted above the inner tube. The inner tube is retained in its longitudinal operative position by the meter tube, a rotatable retainer member, and a wave washer. A locking pin retains the inner tube against rotation. The inner tube, meter tube, and the rotatable retainer member are all assembled into the outer tube through the open end of the outer tube, and they are retained in the outer tube by a retainer member. A meter tube adjusting ring is rotatably mounted on the outer tube, and it is connected to the meter tube for adjusting the position of the metering holes in the meter tube relative to the metering orifices in the inner tube.
