  • Patent number: 7114911
Abstract: Aerodynamically efficient air flow management in axial flow-turbines is provided by utilizing a variable stagger and camber airfoil. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, this is accomplished by providing a two-piece airfoil including a strut and a flap, each of which is mounted to articulate about a common, radially oriented axis. The strut and flap are respectively positioned by a strut gear and a flap gear, located at the radial end of the airfoil and, in an exemplary embodiment, are driven by a stepped synchronizing ring.

  • Patent number: 7104759
Abstract: Blades of increased blade angle may be retrofitted onto existing compressor rotor wheels as replacement blades whereby higher performance and efficiency without replacing the rotor wheel may be achieved. The base attachments of replacement blades are provided with lateral extensions or flanges and the rim of the compressor wheel is provided with recesses straddling the grooves to accommodate the flanges. The leading edge of the replacement blade is positioned circumferentially for support only by the platform extension thereby limiting the mean and vibratory stresses in the leading edge of the airfoil and maximizing damage tolerance.

  • Patent number: 7101175
Abstract: A combustor for oxidizing a combustion fuel and pre-heating one or more reactants for fuel reforming. The combustor includes an elongated housing having an inlet for receiving a combustion fuel and an outlet for exhausting combustion products. The elongated housing further includes a cylindrical side wall, a bottom wall, and a top wall. Inert particles are disposed within the housing adjacent the inlet. A combustion catalyst bed is disposed within the housing above the inert particles that is a mixture of inert particles and combustion catalyst. The inert particles and the combustion catalyst preferably have a volumetric ratio of inert particles to catalyst between about 2:1 and about 4:1. The combustor has at least one heat exchanger within the combustion catalyst bed for heating a reformer reactant and generating steam. Preferably, the combustor includes at least two heat exchangers within the combustion catalyst bed, the heat exchanging elements have different surface areas.

  • Patent number: 7090462
Abstract: A compressor bleed air manifold includes annular outer flanges on opposite sides of the generally annular manifold plenum. The outer and inner flange geometries may be circumferentially tailored to produce optimal case stiffness and thermal response for blade-to-case clearances. The inner flanges are secured to one another by an inner bolt circle radially adjacent the flow path thereby improving the case stiffness, out of roundness and eliminating unsupported sections of the flowpath along an outer diameter thereof. The flanges of the outer bolt circle seal the plenum. The compressor bleed air manifold and the compressor casing load path are thereby isolated from one another.

  • Patent number: 7071183
Abstract: It has been found that inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system are useful for the treatment or prevention of conditions associated with hypoxia or impaired metabolic function or efficiency. In particular, they may be used in connection with therapy of stroke or its recurrence, the acute treatment of myocardial infarction, and the treatment or prevention of wasting or cachexia, and are thus useful in treatment of the symptoms and signs of aging. These inhibitors may also be used to enhance function in healthy subjects.

  • Patent number: 7067827
Abstract: The present invention is related to an apparatus and method for irradiating a product package, comprising a radiation source directing a radiation beam along a beam direction towards said product package, conveying means for transporting said product package past said radiation source along a transport path, and reflecting means located on at least one side of the plane formed by said beam direction and said transport path. By adjusting the distance and angle of the reflecting means to the conveyor and beam, and improved dose uniformity ratio is obtained.

  • Patent number: 7024744
Abstract: A method of tuning a compressor stator blade having a base portion and an airfoil portion to achieve a desired natural frequency, includes a) identifying the natural frequency of the compressor stator blade; b) determining a different target natural frequency for the compressor stator blade; and c) removing material from the base portion of the compressor stator blade in an amount and in a configuration that achieves the target natural frequency. A frequency-tuned compressor stator blade includes an airfoil portion and a base portion, the base portion having a substantially solid rectangular shape; and a groove cut across a width dimension of the base portion, the groove having dimensions selected to obtain a predetermined natural frequency for the airfoil portion.

  • Publication number: 20050282181
Abstract: The invention provides methods for screening multimeric antibodies produced by mammalian cells to find those that exhibit a biological function. The methods can be used to screen large numbers of antibodies, which may be cell surface, secreted, or intracellular antibodies. Antibodies can be screened to find those that bind antigen more avidly or those that compete with a ligand that binds to the antigen for binding. Any biological function that can be tested in vitro can be used to screen the antibodies. Nucleic acids encoding the antibodies that exhibit the biological function can be obtained in a number of ways.
