Provided are both active USB extenders and passive USB extenders that include functionality for accepting both standard and/or non-standard USB commands. The passive extender functions on a USB communications channel and the active extender functions to extend USB communications over a non-USB communications channel. Both types of extenders are configured to handle non-standard USB commands, such as a Macintosh power-on command or a Sun Microsystems reset, suspend, or wake-up command.
