  • Patent number: 5740709
Abstract: A web-cutting arrangement uses two-stage cutting to produce a plurality of products from a continuous web (100), while ensuring that the web, and the products (125) cut therefrom, remain continuously guided and undamaged. The arrangement includes a leading cutting structure (170) which provides an initial partial cut (115) into the web. The partial cut (115) is made along a line (110) directed perpendicular to the web length, leaving a remaining uncut portion (120) along the line (110). Using web transport belts (140) located so as to overlap the cutout (or partially cut) portions of the web (100), the continuous web is moved in a direction parallel to the web length with the belts (140) pulling and guiding the web (100) around rotating cylinders (164, 166).

  • Patent number: 5707330
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) and an apparatus for producing at least one 16-page signature (460). The signatures are produced by folding and cutting sheets cut from a continuous web in a folding machine (500 or 600). The apparatus of the present invention provides a selectable blade device which folds or folds and cuts sheets being processed in the device. When placed in the fold and cut position, the apparatus is capable of producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) or at least one 16-page signature (460) without the need for a final off-line trimming step.

  • Patent number: 5590597
Abstract: A mounting apparatus for a printing cylinder in a printing press is provided. The apparatus includes a tapered bearing housing sleeve 12 adapted for axial insertion into, and retraction out of, a tapered bore 30 formed in a support frame 20 for the printing cylinder. The tapered bearing housing sleeve 12 has an outer circumferential surface 26 which is generally conically shaped forming only part of a cone and an inner core which has a cylindrically shaped bore 34 disposed therein. The tapered bearing housing sleeve 12 has an end with a flanged tip 32 for limiting the axial movement of the tapered housing sleeve within the tapered bore 30. The mounting apparatus further includes a generally annular-shaped bearing 14 which is disposed within the cylindrically shaped bore 34 of the tapered bearing housing sleeve 12. The generally annular-shaped bearing 14 is defined by an inner ring 38 and an outer ring 40 and a plurality of anti-friction elements 42 disposed between the inner ring and the outer ring.

  • Patent number: 5131646
Abstract: A printing press (10) having a delivery fly (12) having a plurality of laterally adjustable arcuate fingers (32) mounted on a shaft (34) and defining a plurality of pockets (33) extending peripherally around the fly (12) to receive a printed article (A) in the pockets (33). The press (10) has a device (42) for rotating the shaft (24), and a belt (18) for moving the articles (A) to a position (14) adjacent the pockets (33) of the fly (12) for depositing the articles (A) in the pockets (33), and a belt (26) for receiving the articles (A) from the pockets (33) of the fly (12), and for transporting the articles (A) away from the fly (12). The press (10) has a hinge (58) for moving the fly (12) to a position away from the belt (18) to provide access to the pockets (33).

  • Patent number: 4961378
Abstract: An apparatus for protecting the printing cylinders of an offset printing unit against damage that can be caused by paper wrapping around on the blanket cylinder when there is a break in the web after it has left the printing unit. The apparatus includes a pair of web capturing inertial rollers between which the web passes, each of the rollers being freely rotatable and each have a plurality of circular web gripping rings which are in constant contact with the web so that the rollers are rotatably driven solely by the web. The gripping rings are laterally adjustable along the axis of rotation of their respective roller so as to permit the traveling web to be gripped in preselected positions in non-print areas.
