    Abstract: A method is provided for producing thin gauge cube-on-edge grain-oriented silicon steel from hot-rolled band to final gauge in two cold reduction steps. The two-stage cold reduction process requires an intermediate anneal between the two stages of cold reduction and requires that the cold working of the desired intermediate gauge to final gauge include a cold reduction of at least 55% to provide a final gauge product of nominally 0.007 inch.A cube-on-edge grain-oriented silicon steel product is also provided.

    Abstract: A process for producing electromagnetic silicon steel having a cube-on-edge orientation and a permeability of at least 1800 (G/O.sub.e) at 10 oersteds. The process includes the steps of preparing a melt of silicon steel containing from 0.02% to 0.06% carbon, from 0.0006% to 0.008% boron, up to 0.01% nitrogen, up to 0.008% aluminum and from 2.5% to 4.0% silicon, casting the steel, hot rolling the steel to hot band gage, annealing the hot band in a temperature range of from 1450.degree.-1650.degree. F., cold rolling the steel to a final gage of about 0.018 inch in one cold reduction, decarburizing the steel, applying a refractory oxide base coating to the steel and texture annealing the steel.

The process includes the steps of: preparing a melt of silicon steel containing from 0.02 to 0.06% carbon, from 0.015 to 0.15% manganese, from 0.005 to 0.05% of material from the group consisting of sulfur and selenium, from 0.0006 to 0.0080% boron, up to 0.0100% nitrogen, up to 1.0% copper, less than 0.005% antimony, less than 0.009% aluminum and from 2.5 to 4.0% silicon; casting; hot rolling; cold rolling; decarburizing; applying a refractory oxide base coating; and final texture annealing. During final texture annealing the steel is heated from a temperature of 1700.degree. F. to a temperature of 1900.degree. F. at an average rate of less than 30.degree. F. per hour, and subsequently maintained at a temperature in excess of 2000.degree. F. for a period of time sufficient to effect a purification of the steel.

    Abstract: A hot rolled band suitable for processing into cube-on-edge oriented silicon steel having a permeability of at least 1870 (G/O.sub.e) at 10 oersteds and a core loss of no more than 0.700 watts per pound at 17 kilogauss; and processing for the steel from which the band is made. The hot rolled band has a thickness of from about 0.050 to about 0.120 inch; and consists essentially of, by weight, 0.02 to 0.06% carbon, 0.015 to 0.15% manganese, 0.01 to 0.05% of material from the group consisting of sulfur and selenium; 0.0006 to 0.0080% boron, up to 0.0100% nitrogen, 2.5 to 4.0% silicon, between 0.3 and 1.0% copper, no more than 0.008% aluminum, balance iron. Processing includes the steps of cold rolling the steel band to a thickness no greater than 0.020 inch without an intermediate anneal between cold rolling passes; preparing several coils from the steel; decarburizing the steel and final texture annealing the steel. Essential to the invention is the inclusion of a controlled amount of copper in the melt.

F in a hydrogen-bearing atmosphere having a dew point of from +20.degree. to +110.degree. F; applying a refractory oxide base coating to said steel; and final texture annealing said steel. The variables of time, temperature and dew point are monitored during normalizing so as to result in a steel having at least 320 parts per million of oxygen, based on the total weight of the steel, within 10 microns of the surfaces of said steel.
