Patent number: 7516815Abstract: A device for simulating sound produced by certain equipment, for example a rotor-stator arrangement of a turbomachine, or for generation of opposing sound fields for active sound control, including active sound reduction and active sound amplification, comprises flow obstacles (2) provided in a flow duct (1) flown by a fluid at which vortices (5, 6) are shed at a certain frequency depending on the shape and size of the flow obstacles and the velocity of flow. The quantity and spatial arrangement of the flow obstacles is selected such that a periodically spatially and temporally changing pressure field for the excitation of a sound field (8) of a certain modal content is produced by the entirety of the vortices shed. This sound field reacts synchronizingly on the vortex shedding. The resonant circuit so formed, whose vortex shedding frequency is in the range of the resonant frequency of the sound field to be excited, is the sound source.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2005Date of Patent: April 14, 2009Assignee: Roll-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KGInventors: Marco Rose, Fredi Holste, Frank Arnold, Alastair D Moore

Publication number: 20040149340Abstract: A valve for controlling a flow of a fluid between a first environment to a second environment. The valve includes a frame adapted to fit within a perimeter of an aperture in a divider separating the first environment from the second environment. The valve additionally includes a first gate movable within the frame to control a flow of the fluid through the aperture between the first environment and the second environment. The first gate has a substantially aerodynamically clean surface that is substantially free from protrusions that may disrupt the flow of the fluid over the first gate surface. The aerodynamically clean surface reduces coherent vortex shedding of the fluid as the fluid flows across the surface of the first gate. To further reduce vortex shedding, the first gate includes a rounded leading edge. Additionally, the first gate includes a trailing edge adapted to reduce edge tones.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2003Publication date: August 5, 2004Inventors: Martin Steinert, Frank Arnold, Ulf Michel, Wolfgang Neise, Herbert L. Publication number: 20010047621Abstract: A system and method for odorizing natural gas in a pipeline uses an odorant injection pump operated by a programmable controller. In response to measured gas flow in the gas pipeline, and a preset setpoint, the injection pump injects liquid odorant directly into the pipeline. A flowmeter in the odorant line measures the amount of odorant actually injected to confirm that the required amount enters the pipeline. If the amount of odorant actually injected differs from that which is required by the setpoint, the controller compensates for the difference. The controller preferably logs pertinent data about operation of the system. The controller can be reprogrammed remotely to simplify the task of changing system operation.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 1999Publication date: December 6, 2001Inventor: JOE FRANK ARNOLD

Patent number: 4228384Abstract: A bidirectional, axial air gap, brushless, printed circuit DC motor having a stationary, low inductance armature bonded to the motor frame and having a plurality of rotating permanent magnets. Electro-optical sensing is employed which produces a unique digital representation of the magnet position. The digital output of the electro-optical sensor is decoded and, using brush substitution techniques, is used to selectively and progressively energize fields in the armature winding ahead of the rotating magnets. Both single field per pole and multiple field per pole commutation techniques are taught. The armature may be cut so as to produce several independent coils which may be combined in various ways, depending on the application.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1978Date of Patent: October 14, 1980Assignee: Kollmorgen Technologies CorporationInventors: Frank Arnold, Jr., Dana F. Geiger
