  • Patent number: 4093952
Abstract: A guidance system for aircraft and ships, which system comprises at least two localizer antenna arrangements which are spaced in elevation above a reflecting surface, at least two distance measuring antenna arrangements which are spaced in elevation above the reflecting surface, and at least two glide slope antenna arrangements which are mounted vertically above each other, the guidance system being such that the localizer antenna arrangements are at a mean height of at least 21/2 wavelengths above the reflecting surface and are fed with signals having the same radio frequency but having a phase difference, the distance measuring antenna arrangements are at a mean height of at least 25 wavelengths above the reflecting surface and are fed with signals having the same radio frequency but having a phase difference, and the glide slope antenna arrangements are fed with signals having the same radio frequency but two different frequencies of amplitude modulation to give by reflection from the reflecting surface at

  • Patent number: 4080566
Abstract: An electronic instrument module for detecting and measuring the forward and reflected RF voltage wave signals on a coaxial transmission line. The instrument is integral with a coaxial line section adapted to be electrically inserted in a tubular transmission line, the line section having an elongated conductive metal body with a central cylindrical opening with a coaxial center conductor therein electrically insulated from the metal body. The metal body also has a transverse opening communicating with the central cylindrical opening and adapted to receive an inductive pick-up coil mounted on the body for rotation in the opening about an axis normal to the axis of the line section. The pick-up coil is responsive to the voltage wave signal on the transmission line.

  • Patent number: 4075554
Abstract: A VSWR meter circuit using a variable RF attenuator for use in an electronic instrument for detecting and measuring the forward and reflected RF voltage wave signals on a coaxial transmission line. The instrument is integral with a coaxial line section adapted to be electrically inserted in a tubular transmission line, the line section having an outer conductor with a coaxial center conductor therein. An inductive pick-up coil is mounted in the field surrounding the center conductor for rotation about an axis normal to the axis of the line section and is responsive to the voltage wave signal on the transmission line. A D'Arsonval meter movement is connected to the pick-up coil through a meter circuit designed so that the meter provides an indication of the level of either the forward voltage wave signal or the reflected wave signal depending on the orientation of the inductive pick-up coil.

  • Patent number: 4030143
Abstract: A ball-and-socket joint prosthesis developed for the shoulder has one component in the form of a ball connected through a neck to a stem, a first cup engaged with the ball in a snap fit which is held captive by a first clip connected round the cup, and a second cup releasably engaged around the remainder of the ball. The second cup is slotted from its rim to accommodate the first component neck and so predetermine the relative positions of these parts, and the second cup rim is complementary with that of the first cup to predetermine the relative positions of the cups around the ball. The resultant assembly therefore fixes the relative positions of the one component and first cup to facilitate securement of these parts, while keeping the articular surfaces free of cement, and the second cup is removed after securement to leave a stable captive ball-and-socket joint.

  • Patent number: 3988843
Abstract: Improvement in undersea mining apparatus, of the kind wherein a hydraulic suction conduit riser is towed from a forwardly moving surface ship while a mixture of liquids and sea-floor solids (such as sea water and manganese nodules) is gathered at the deep sea floor and transported to the sea surface in a liquid-solids flow pumped up through the riser, comprises liquid-solids flow transition chamber that is connected to riser by an intermediate conveyance duct and towed along the undersea floor to gather and transmit solids from undersea floor to riser. Transition chamber has three mutually communicating openings: a forward-facing entrance for gathering sea floor solids, a rearward-facing entrance for admitting a hydraulically induced flow of sea water and a forwardly upward-facing exit port joined with the conveyance duct to direct transmission of liquid-solids mixture flow from chamber into conveyance duct.

  • Patent number: 3981293
Abstract: Disclosed is a solar heat collector having a cover plate mounted in spaced relation to a solar energy absorber. The cover plate has a transmittance coefficient (t) for solar radiation e.g., in the wavelength range of about 0.3 to 2.1 microns, and a reflectance coefficient (r) for infrared energy in the wavelength range of about 2 to 15 micron. The transmittance coefficient and reflectance coefficient of the cover plate are selected such that the product of (r) and (t) is equal to or greater than about 0.25 to increase the saturation temperature (T.sub.s) of the solar heat collector.

  • Patent number: 3975054
Abstract: Vehicle constructed for being towed along undersea floor area where desired mineral aggregates, such as manganese nodules, are dispersed on ocean bottom carries apparatus utilizing power from towed motion, hydraulic suction and vehicle-borne motor for acquiring, concentrating and transmitting desired aggregates to conduit for upward transport. Vehicle has motor-powered water impeller, ducting and nozzle for directing pressurized sheet-jet of water rearwardly downward near undersea floor, enclosed ramp inclined rearwardly upward with entrance behind sheet-jet to receive solids dislodged from sea floor by jet, hopper and trough to receive solids moved up ramp by flow of water up ramp when vehicle is towed forward, and separating screens and ducting to direct desired sizes of solids into conduit for delivery to surface ship. Operationally effective path can be widened with horizontally fenestrated sweeps disposed in rearwardly diverging and converging V-patterns.
