  • Patent number: 4320725
Abstract: A puffing swirler for use in an internal combustion engine. The puffing swirler causes the air and vaporized fuel mixture to have a controlled high velocity swirling action within the piston cylinder of the engine to provide improved high efficiency combustion of the fuel therein. The puffing swirler includes a flow directing deflector movable with the inlet valve and defining a plurality of swirl-inducing passages. A flow control device is provided for preventing delivery of the fuel fluid to the inlet port until the piston has moved substantially from the top position toward the bottom position thereof, thereby producing a substantial preselected pressure differential between the fluid supply and the cylinder to effect the desired puffing delivery of the fluid to the cylinder. Structure may be provided to releasably retain the flow control device in the full open position as during high speed operation of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4279573
Abstract: A high pressure fluid pump for use such as a fuel injection pump. The pump utilizes a diaphragm for cooperation with valve controlled passage structure leading to the pump chamber to provide the desired high pressure output. The diaphragm is defined by one portion of a diaphragm element, which portion is sealingly bonded peripherally to the wall of the valve body defining the valve chamber. A second portion of the diaphragm element formed unitarily integrally with the diaphragm portion is free to move in the valve chamber and includes a portion extending into a plunger bore for transmitting forces from a reciprocating plunger having an inner end extending into the bore to the diaphragm. The plunger further is provided with a synthetic resin tip. The plunger and tip are arranged to be lubricated during reciprocation of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 4016847
Abstract: A split-path fuel/air induction system for carbureted internal combustion engines. One embodiment of the system utilizes an annular separation chamber located directly beneath the carburetor and discharging into the intake manifold. A flow of fuel/air mixture aspirated through the carburetor enters the separation chamber and is caused to divide within the chamber. A majority of the incoming air and vaporized fuel take a sharply curved first path and are partially deflected by an annular shield within the separation chamber so as to flow directly into the intake manifold. Liquid droplets of fuel, above a minimum size, are separated from the air stream due to their own inertia and are caused to take a second path. This second path leads beneath and behind the deflector shield. A heating coil located behind the shield heats the liquid fuel causing it to vaporize and then enter the intake manifold. An alternative embodiment also utilizes a dual-path induction system.
