  • Patent number: 5722494
Abstract: One or more bracing structures are placed at an underwater mud line location. The bracing structure(s) are first used as a template to guide the offshore drilling and placement of well tubulars. After drilling through the template is completed, at least one of the bracing structures is raised and attached to the well tubulars to act as a support structure for bracing between the well tubulars. The uppermost raised structure typically acts as a working platform or a support for a working platform. If more than one bracing structure is used, they are stacked one on top the other at the underwater location until the well tubulars are in place and one or more of the structures are raised and spaced apart.

  • Patent number: 5373899
Abstract: The invention controls a well during completion by first running a sealable well completion tool and string downhole from the surface and isolating a productive interval near an oil or gas formation from the remainder of the wellbore. The drilling or other fluid in the interval is displaced from the interval under control by a non-damaging fluid. Using a pressure source from the surface, the non-damaging fluid is pressurized and circulated to move the gravel to the formation face by fluid entrainment. After the gravel is separated from the entraining fluid to form a gravel pack, the oil or gas formation may now be produced through the gravel pack.

  • Patent number: 5181571
Abstract: A ported float shoe (5) and a landing collar (16) are attached at a first end of a portion of a casing string (4) and a sliding air trapping insert (20) is attached at the other end. The air trapping insert (20) includes a fluid flow passageway (24) blocked by a plug (22) attached by shear pins to the insert (20) or the air trapping insert is an inflatable insert (55) having a conduit (60) providing a fluid passageway to the first end. The air trapping insert and float shoe form an air cavity (12a or 12b) within the string portion (4). The air cavity provides buoyant forces during running, cementing or other casing operations within a borehole (2), reducing running drag and the related chance of a differentially stuck casing (4). It also allows reciprocation and rotation during cementing and avoids separate removal steps.

  • Patent number: 5086843
Abstract: An oil tool release joint with a top sub that has a pin end which inserts into an opening in a bottom sub provides an alternative remote tool for separating pipe string segments after rotation. The subs are held together by shear pins which are wedged through holes in the bottom sub into recesses in the top sub. The bottom sub has uphole extending splines that engage slots in the top sub when the subs are connected. The splines and slots translate rotational motion from one sub to the other. The joint releases upon the application of a force sufficient to shear the shear pins either by hydraulic pressure in the drill string, an upward pull on the top sub or both. A guide ring encircles the uphole ends of the splines to guide material into the bottom sub when the joint is separated.

  • Patent number: 4797619
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring the spatial characteristics of color CRTs includes the scanning of an image of a white vertical line with a knife edge aperture and integrating the intensity values at each position of the knife edge. The centroids of the beams of the CRT are found by determining the X coordinants of the 50% points of the Y axis of the integral data, and the spatial line profiles are determined by differentiating the integral data. The integral data may be fitted to a Gaussian curve prior to analysis.
