    Abstract: A method and novel barrier coating solutions are provided for imparting improved vapor, gas or aroma permeability characteristics to a coated polymeric substrate. The method and solutions employ a lithium-potassium copolysilicate of the formula (Li.sub.2 O).sub.x (K.sub.2 O).sub.1-x (SiO.sub.2).sub.y. For the method, y is between 1 and 10, if x is less than 1; or y is greater than 4.6, if x is 1. For the novel coating solutions, y is greater than 4.6 if x is less than 1; or x is greater than 0.5 if y is between 1 and 10.
